How to Read a Horse Racing Racecard

Our racecards are packed with essential details to help you make informed decisions when picking which horse to back. Understanding the racecard structure can increase your chances of finding winners. Here’s a guide to reading them effectively:

1. Number

Each horse is assigned a number, listed on the left side of the racecard. This number corresponds to the saddlecloth the horse will wear during the race. For flat racing, a number in brackets also indicates the stall from which the horse will start.

2. Silks

Silks refer to the jockey’s colours, displayed alongside the horse’s number. These are chosen by the horse’s owner. If an owner has multiple runners in the same race, their horses will wear matching silks but with differently coloured caps for distinction.

3. Jockey (J)

This section displays the jockey riding the horse.

4. Trainer (T)

Here, you’ll find the name of the horse’s trainer. If the horse is trained abroad, the trainer’s nationality will be noted in brackets.

5. Form

The form provides a snapshot of the horse’s recent performances, typically showing its last five race results. The results are listed from left to right, with the most recent on the far right. For instance, a form reading “32121” means the horse finished third, second, first, second, and first in its last five races.

If a horse finished outside the top nine in any race, a “0” will appear in its form. Letters may also be included:

  • P = Pulled Up
  • F = Fell
  • UR = Unseated Rider
  • BD = Brought Down
  • R = Refused to race

Hyphens (-) mark the start of a new season, while forward slashes (/) indicate the horse’s return after two seasons or more.

6. Age + Sex

This section shows the horse’s age and sex. Terminology varies depending on the horse’s age and gender:

  • Male horses under five are called colts. Over five, they are simply referred to as horses, but if they’ve been castrated, they’re called geldings.
  • Female horses under five are known as fillies, while those five or older are called mares.
7. Weight (W)

This displays the weight the horse will carry, shown in stones and pounds (e.g., “10st 2lb” for 10 stone and 2 pounds). The total weight includes the jockey’s weight and any additional saddlebag weight.

8. Official Rating (OR)

The Official Rating (OR) is a handicap mark assigned to the horse. This rating determines how much weight the horse must carry in handicapped races.

9. Form + Verdict

This section offers a brief verdict on each horse’s chances. Our editors provide insights based on recent form, analysing how the horse has performed in past races.
