Looking at the draw, we cannot overlook Kyren Robertson, who surely has the temperament and form to go all the way here. The win over O’Sullivan in York was remarkable, and we expect him to go deep in this event as well. After all, there is little value in backing Judd Trump, who has been placed in the ultimate ‘group of death’ also involving Higgins, Selby, Allen and Barry Hawkins. Trump looked poor when defeated by Matt Selt in the UK and hasn’t been at his best form either when losing to Dave Gilbert last week. Despite that, he looked himself when winning the Champion of Champions, so, although he cannot be ruled out and is still the one to beat, there is little value in backing him in the outright market.

Quarter three is surely the weak section of the draw. Gilbert should progress without too many problems, but don’t forget that Anthony McGill is in scintillating form and deserves some consideration if you like long odds.
Ronnie O’Sullivan should progress without problems in the bottom quarter. He should beat anyone there, even if Brecel has what it takes to stay in the game. Ronnie, however, he is losing to players of his class lately like Higgins and Wilson, so we don’t see him going all the way. His last success was at the 2020 World Championship, and inconsistency has been an issue for him.
An interesting each-way punt is Hossein Vafaei. He destroyed O’Sullivan in the first round of the German Masters and also hammered Selby in York. He certainly has great talent and could be the surprise of this event.
