Main Bet: Tom Hoge

Since 2007, the Fortinet Championship has been held annually under several names. In the eight years that the competition has been held in Silverado, winning scores have typically ranged from the mid-to high teens.

Our first pick for this new PGA Tour season is Tom Hoge. Hoge had a breakthrough season the year before, winning the AT & T Pebble Beach Pro-Am with a commanding performance for his first PGA Tour triumph.

Hoge, who placed second at The AmEx in his previous outing, has had a solid start to the year. With the exception of the sporadic glimpses, like his ninth-place finish in the PGA Championship, his form declined in the middle of the year, but he regained it right at the end of the 2021–2022 campaign. He ended 4th at the 3M Open four tournaments ago and that was a very good sign as since that success at Pebble Beach, and the last time seen, he looked solid at the Tour Championship, on his first trip to East Lake, where he finished 10th with all aspects of his game looking good.

Hoge’s approach to play, which he’s kept all year, even during his slumps in performance, is the strength of his game. He finished 11th on the PGA Tour the previous year. The driver, who is ranked 88th, is reliable enough and has been performing well lately, earning strokes in 3 of his previous four starts. His driving distance statistics have also increased noticeably this year.

He also performed well on the par 5s, finishing 53rd in par 5 scoring, and was one of the top scramblers on the tour last season, placing 16th. Hoge only missed the cut once in his last 5 visits to Silverado, with his best finish coming when he placed 17th in 2019. Additionally, he has some promising recent form, as evidenced by his third-place performance at the Sony Open, fifth at the Farmers Insurance Open, and fourth at the 3M Open, four outings prior.

Hoge’s first major victory was in California last year, and the state has seen him put up many of his best performances throughout his career. I’m hopeful he can add another impressive state performance to his resume this week. If he can play the same calibre of golf he did at the conclusion of the previous season, he seems like a real contender.

Shelton (Each Way) To Win

Each-way Bet: Robby Shelton

When Robby Shelton first made it onto the PGA Tour in the 2019–20 season, I was quite taken with the former #2 amateur. He achieved the top 10 three times that season, which was quite encouraging, but he suffered a little last year, which led to him sacrificing his tour card.

The 27-year-old showed his potential this year, bringing his total number of victories on the tour to four, and with the benefit of his time on the PGA Tour in 2020 and 2021, I think he’s a player to watch going forward and someone I’m expecting to win on the PGA Tour. During his earlier stint on tour, Shelton demonstrated his ability to play well from the tee to the green, but his putter often failed. He has the potential to perform well in this location, as seen by his rankings of 24th overall in driving and 12th in par-5 scoring.

He has already shown glimmers of it; on his first attempt at this course in 2019, he finished 52nd and looked especially strong with the driver as well as the greens. We can also be encouraged by the fact that he finished third at the 3M Open, one of his top 10 performances on the PGA Tour in 2020, and that he also had top 25 finishes at the Farmers Insurance Open & Sony Open.

We believe he has what it takes to be in contention on the back of his winning experience matured on the Korn Ferry Tour this year. Although there are stronger candidates in the field, he has to be considered and looks like a very valuable each-way punt.
