France vs Luxembourg Predictions
Can Kante Carry France? Les Bleus Face Luxembourg in Euro Warm-Up
Key Stats
– France overpower Luxembourg: Luxembourg have lost 16 of their 18 meetings with France, suggesting a one-sided affair.
– N’Golo Kante’s return a gamble: France included the 33-year-old midfielder, raising questions about his fitness for high-level competition.
– Luxembourg aim to upset the odds: Despite a historically poor record, they had a strong qualifying campaign and hope to challenge France.
France will begin preparation for Euro 2024 at the Stade Saint-Symphorien against Luxembourg on Wednesday night, before facing Canada. Didier Deschamps’ men are one of the top favourites to land Euro 2024 glory, while the visitors have the next Nations League campaign in sight.
Looking at the squad at the disposal of Deschamps, it is not surprising to see that they are once again the team to beat ahead of this Euro campaign. A win in Germany would somehow take away the pain of that Argentinian penalty heartache in Qatar only one and a half years ago.
In the qualification for Euro 2024, however, that seemed already a distant memory, with France having secured 22 points out of 24 available, with a 14-0 destruction of Gibraltar included.
Les Blues have been placed in an intriguing group with the Netherlands, Poland, and Austria, so they would need to be up for the challenge immediately. Qualifiers excluded, their preparation for this summer’s event didn’t go as planned as they suffered a defeat in March against Germany, even if they did rebounce with a 3-2 win over Chile. So despite all the successes, there has been some level of criticism for Deschamps work, but this will be immediately forgiven if France secures European glory in July.
They have the opportunity to build up some confidence when they take on a Luxembourg side who are yet to qualify for a majour tournament, despite a good performance in Group J.
Despite finishing with 17 points, they ended up in third place behind a strong Portugal and Slovakia (22 points), but qualified for the playoff anyway thanks to their Nations League performance. A 2-0 loss to Georgia in the semi-final affair in March, however, ended their European dreams. Since then, they have prevailed 2-1 in a friendly clash against Kazakhstan, which confirmed some of the progress seen in the last few months.
This June, they will be seriously tested, first against France and then against Belgium. Luc Holtz’s men will be hoping to showcase their credentials against stronger sides and gear up for another promotion push in the Nations League League C, where they are going to face the likes of Northern Ireland, Belarus and Bulgaria.
Luxembourg have lost 16 of their 18 encounters against France and it will be a massive surprise if they can keep the score close, considering the huge gap in quality between the two sides.
While 16 of Luxembourg’s 18 previous matches against France have unsurprisingly ended in defeat, one of the two instances in which they did not come up short came in their most recent contest, a goalless draw during 2018 World Cup qualifying to end a 14-match losing sequence.
Team News
The French coach surprised many with his Euro 2024 squad selection, with N’Golo Kante, who is back on Blues duty after a successful campaign in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ittihad. The need to have a balanced midfield might have pushed Deschamps for this rather unpopular decision, and time will tell if the 33-year old will be able to still compete at the highest level.
Winger Bradley Barcola from PSG should feature in this friendly game, while Lucas Hernandez will be out of the squad due to another injury. With Ferland Mendy and Eduardo Camavinga resting after Champions League efforts, there will be opportunities for Deschamps to make some experiments in this friendly clash.
Luxembourg boss Holtz will also miss some personnel as midfield stalwart Leandro Barreiro, won’t be available for this game. He will, however, be able to count on the likes of Sebastien Thill and winger Gerson Rodrigues, who are two of the best players available in the country. The latter is the all-time top scorer for Luxembourg, with 21 goals to his name. In defence, Laurent Jans, who plays his business in the German third league, will become the nation’s highest male appearance maker of all time with 103 caps.
France possible starting lineup:
Maignan; Kounde, Pavard, Upamecano, T. Hernandez; Zaire-Emery, Rabiot; Dembele, Griezmann, Mbappe; Giroud
Luxembourg possible starting lineup:
Moris; Bohnert, Chanot, Mahmutovic, Jans; Sinani, S. Thill, Olesen, Martins Pereira, Dardari; Rodrigues
Betting Angles and Predictions
Best bet: Draw/France Half Time/Full Time
It is difficult to expect anything else than a comfortable win for France, but Luxembourg shouldn’t be underestimated. They are coming into this match on the back of their most successful qualifying campaign in their history, and with Kylian Mbappe unlikely to feature for the whole 90 minutes, it might take some time for the hosts to showcase their superiority.
A good value bet, therefore, is to back a draw at halftime with France leading at the end of the game. In the second half, we expect Les Blues to stamp their authority and find a way to get a rather comfortable success in this penultimate Euro 2024 warm-up fixture.
Correct Score prediction
We expect France to get the job done but not humiliate a decent Luxembourg side, who should have what it takes to keep things close for at least an hour of play. Backing France to win 2-0 looks like a decent bet in the correct score market.
Goalscorer prediction: Randal Kolo Muani to score anytime
This could be a golden opportunity for some of the fringe players to showcase that they are ready for bigger games. Randal Kolo Muani has scored two goals in his last three games for Les Blues and surely has the quality to cause problems for Luxembourg’s backline, which shipped nine against Portugal in September.
