Among the headline acts, the world’s top-ranked woman Aryna Sabalenka will begin her pursuit of a maiden Roland Garros crown. After ascending to the summit of the WTA rankings and clinching the Madrid title en route, she now faces Kamilla Rakhimova on Court Philippe-Chatrier in what should serve as a clear litmus test of her clay-court evolution. The Belarusian powerhouse remains a Grand Slam juggernaut on hard courts, but Paris clay has yet to surrender to her aggressive brand of baseline tennis.
Later on Centre Court, Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng squares off against former French Open finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Zheng, now a firm top-eight seed, brings both confidence and form, and the Russian veteran is unlikely to hand anything away cheaply.
Italian trailblazer Jasmine Paolini also returns to the court following her sensational Rome triumph. Drawn against Yuan Yue, Paolini enters Roland Garros with her eyes firmly set on going one better than her runner-up finish last year. Her clay-season record is sparkling, and her blend of touch and grit will be difficult to stop.
Also featuring on Day 1 are Lorenzo Musetti, Elina Svitolina and American hopefuls Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe, each with their own set of aspirations and question marks. But as evening shadows fall over the red courts of Roland Garros, attention will inevitably turn to the men’s night session, where an enthralling clash between two explosive talents promises fireworks to close out the day.

Shelton’s performances since reaching the semi-finals in Melbourne and contesting the final in Munich may have fluctuated, but those showings underline his ceiling. Against Sonego, who has also endured a patchy spell, Shelton’s athleticism and dynamic first-strike tennis should offer him a definitive edge. The slower surface might not be the American’s preferred battleground, but his ability to dictate with the serve and backhand combination, particularly on quicker night-time conditions in Paris, will play in his favour.
Sonego, a gritty competitor and crowd favourite, lacks the same firepower and can find himself vulnerable when unable to dictate. In three previous meetings between the two, each match saw both players taking at least a set, but the margins always tilted slightly towards Shelton. That trend is likely to continue, but this time with Shelton showing more control and composure in the critical moments.
If he plays with discipline and executes his aggressive tactics, the handicap looks well within reach.
