This year’s field in Germany offers a mix of narratives and motivations. Jack Draper, last season’s champion, has opted to bypass his title defence in favour of a schedule geared around peaking at SW19. His absence removes a significant contender and opens the door for others to make a statement early in the grass swing. Among those hoping to take full advantage are Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz, two top-10 ranked players carrying short odds but lingering questions.
Zverev’s campaign ended abruptly in Paris, where he struggled in his quarter-final clash, and although the German plays on home soil, grass has never truly been his domain. He has yet to lift a trophy on this surface and hasn’t featured in a final on the green since 2017. The mere decision to enter Stuttgart may suggest dissatisfaction with his current form and a desire to recalibrate quickly.
Fritz, meanwhile, has a better track record on grass, including a trio of titles at Eastbourne. However, his draw in Stuttgart looks anything but straightforward. Early challenges from versatile opponents like Lorenzo Sonego or Quentin Halys could test his confidence, and if he advances, he may well face Denis Shapovalov – a player with proven pedigree on grass, having reached the last four at Wimbledon. With this side of the draw looking particularly congested, other names begin to stand out as more attractive value propositions.

With question marks hanging over the favourites, this edition of the Stuttgart Open may be tailor-made for a breakthrough from a player on the cusp of fulfilling their considerable potential. Ben Shelton fits that profile perfectly. The American left-hander possesses a power-based game that seems well suited to the slicker conditions of grass, and although titles have been relatively scarce so far, signs are pointing towards an imminent leap.
Shelton’s performance on the clay in Paris was eye-catching for a player more naturally aligned with quicker surfaces. Reaching the second week at Roland-Garros – and ultimately falling to Carlos Alcaraz – demonstrated his growing adaptability and mental fortitude. That run alone suggests a player who is mentally locked in and physically ready to carry his form into the grass season.
In Stuttgart, Shelton finds himself in a portion of the draw that avoids the biggest names, with Jiri Lehecka being the only other seeded player in his quarter. Lehecka has been struggling for rhythm, and should Shelton find his footing early, his serve and aggressive groundstrokes could make him a nightmare opponent on this surface. With several top seeds dealing with either inconsistency or difficult openers, Shelton’s pathway looks favourable, and the tournament could provide him with a launchpad toward a third ATP title.
