Main Bet: USA (-5.5) To Win
The only time the Internationals have been able to defeat USA was in the 1998 Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne. This has been the most lopsided competition in team golf, and this week’s showdown at Quail Hollow appears to have a high likelihood of continuing the American winning streak.
Although the 2003 tournament in South Africa ended in a tie, the USA have won 11 of the 13 Cups, including the last 8. The quest for the Internationals has simply become more difficult this time around as a result of LIV Golf’s entry into the scene.
This week, only high rollers can consider betting on the USA at this low price, but more conservative bettors can focus on the handicap market. Our preferred option is to back the USA to win by 6 or more points. The United States cruised to a 19-11 victory in their most recent Presidents Cup home encounter. And that was back when the Internationals’ side didn’t have important players banned. LIV Golf players won’t be able to tee off at Quail Hollow because the Presidents Cup is a PGA Tour event. The Internationals have been wiped out by LIV Golf.
When the United States won by an eight-point advantage in 2017, Hideki Matsuyama was the third-ranked player in the world, Jason Day was a top-tier athlete, and Louis Oosthuizen & Charl Schwartzel were feared rivals. The Internationals were wiped out, even though they had a core of quality.
This time, LIV Golf defectors Oosthuizen, Abraham Ancer, Joaquin Niemann, Marc Leishman, and Cameron Smith are unable to tee off. Those five would have been on the team without a doubt, while Branden Grace and Schwartzel would have both likely received wildcard picks. Trevor Immelman, the captain, is pulling his hair out since three of the first five LIV tournaments have been won by ex Internationals: Schwartzel, Grace, and Smith.
The Internationals are struggling after losing half of their team to the Saudis. There isn’t enough depth to make up for the losses. The only genuine American LIV Golf casualty is Dustin Johnson, and the rest of the American lineup is still very strong. A competition that is already lopsided could become a complete non-event.
The Americans currently hold an 11.6 global ranking average. The team has three of the top five players in the world, and all 12 players are among the top 25. The player with the best ranking for the Internationals is Matsuyama (17), who has struggled with an injury for most of the year. The away team’s average ranking is 48.9, while Taylor Pendrith, one of their players, is even outside the top 100. The Americans have many obvious combinations, while Internationals captain Immelman is left perplexed. With eight rookies on his team, this is the youngest and least seasoned starting lineup in Presidents Cup history. They appear to be sacrificial lambs.
