Christiaan Bezuidenhout is the favourite in the Joburg Open betting, although 7-1 is not a very alluring price given that this is his first time playing at the newly renovated Houghton. The Presidents Cup star is a gentleman and should be admired, but after a sloppy final round in the Nedbank Challenge, the best thing to do is to move down the market.
Jayden Schaper is expected to do well in his transition from the Sunshine Tour to the DP World Tour. Schaper has always been a talent machine. He was the finest junior and amateur golfer in South Africa before turning professional. He was a neat, accurate player with a tight, effective swing. At the start of 2020, when he was getting close to the end of his amateur career, he played in the South African Open and came in sixth.
Schaper appeared to be on his way to becoming a world-beater, the type of early impact not seen from a South African amateur since the days of a young Ernie Els. After that, he kept showing up on the Sunshine Tour leaderboards, and by the end of 2020, he had finished 18th in the Joburg Open and was very close to making his big break in the Alfred Dunhill Championship. In the Dunhill, a final-round 75 resulted in a runner-up finish.
Schaper has had a solid second half of last year and his fomr has continued this season. His form statistics from his past 6 Sunshine Tour events are 9-6-2-4-17-10. Schaper came in eighth at the Sunshine Tour Qualifying School in Houghton for 2020, which gave him a spot on the tour. He is one of the few competitors in this field with favourable course experience, and his price looks to carry some decent value.
