Main Bet: Jeunghun Wang To Win

Our pick for this week is Jeunghun Wang from Korea. Even at age 26, he has accomplished a lot in his short post-college life. He placed fourth in the China Masters ten years ago, won that tournament in 2014, and then excelled all around Asia in 2015 and 2016. He won the DP World Tour tournaments in Morocco and Mauritius back-to-back in the middle of the following year, and he did very well as the winner of the Qatar Masters in 2017. In 2019, his performance improved, but in late 2020, he decided to give golf a break for 18 months.

When returning, he has finished sixth at home, 23rd in Morocco, and third last time out after spending the entire week in the top 10. That’s a pretty good form, and I like that Royal Queensland doesn’t have any lengthy grass. The wind, bunkers, and scurrying over short grass are its main defences. As we saw at the Qatar Masters in Doha, he is very good at all three of these things, so he has a great chance of winning here.

If you want to have a second choice, our suggestion is Min Woo Lee. Although the market at the top is competitive, I believe Min Woo Lee offers a little bit. The Western Australian Lee finished fifth in the Perth International in his final match on home soil as an amateur, which was a sign of things to come.

He has competed in six paid starts in Australia, winning the Victorian Open and placing in the top five in five of them. He finished third in this competition at Royal Pines in 2019 and fourth here at Royal Queensland in 2018. During both of those weeks, he finished in the top 10 for all four rounds. Additionally, he just finished the 2022 DP World Tour season in excellent style by placing third in the Open de Espana and the Andalucia Masters, ninth in the Nedbank Challenge, and 12th in the DP World Tour Championship last week.
