Main Bet: Richard Mansell To Win

The DP World Tour’s mini Low Country Swing, punctuated by the PGA Championship, proceeds unabated this week. The tour extends from the Soudal Open at Rinkven International in Belgium to Bernardus Golf Club in the Netherlands, an eventful transition that players and punters equally relish.

Bernardus Golf Club: A Modern Heathland Attraction

Bernardus, a modern heathland course birthed from the creative genius of American Kyle Phillips, has lived up to expectations in the two events it has hosted on the circuit. Although the water hazards are a bit more than one might find on traditional heathland layouts in England and Scotland, the visuals and the fast-paced, open style of golf resonate authenticity.

Phillips’ other creations, like Kingsbarns and Dundonald Links in Scotland, PGA National in Sweden, The Grove in England, Verdura in Italy, and Yas Links in Abu Dhabi, have all hosted DP World Tour events. These courses encapsulate an array of designs – from modern links to parkland to windswept resort tracks, yet all share a Phillips’ signature: inviting playability.

Victor Perez: Defending Champion with a Penchant for Phillips’ Designs

Victor Perez, the Frenchman who claimed victory at this course last year, has a particular fondness for Phillips’ designs. He bagged the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship with a round at Kingsbarns and followed up last year’s victory with another win at Yas Links in January.

Another top contender for this week’s tournament, Poland’s Adrian Meronk, also enjoys playing on Phillips courses, having secured a third position at Bernardus last year and a T10th at Yas Links. His affinity for the course might be reminiscent of the Melbourne sandbelt, the scene of his victory at November’s Australian Open.

Richard Mansell: A Potential Main Bet

Although Perez and Meronk are well-deserving of their favouritism, the odds are slightly short, leading us to shift our gaze to other promising contenders.

Richard Mansell, the Englishman who displayed an instant affinity for Bernardus, is a standout option. The 28-year-old ranked eighth for Strokes Gained Tee to Green, achieving a second-round 64 and a sixth-place finish in 2021, and added a ninth-place finish (ranking fourth for SG Putting) last spring.

Mansell’s fondness for Bernardus is not surprising, given his initiation into the game on Beau Desert in Staffordshire – a course reminiscent of Bernardus. His strong performances in 2021 and 2022, coupled with a close call to lifting his first trophy at last year’s Dunhill Links, all point to a bright future for the player.

Mansell’s consistent performance, including sixth in the Singapore Classic and a near-lead position in the Korea Championship, gives rise to a palpable excitement for his upcoming games. It would seem that the stage is set for him to contend once again, and perhaps, secure his breakthrough win.
