The Reigning Champion: Carlos Alcaraz

The reigning champion and French Open favourite will start his preparation for Roland Garros in his home country with the ATP Barcelona. The price on him to retain the crown here is just 11/10 at the moment of writing. This price makes little appeal considering his recent physical issues, including his struggles in the Rio final against Cameron Norrie and his withdrawal from Miami due to “post-traumatic arthritis” in his left hand and “muscular discomfort” in his spine. We expect him to have recovered by now, but moving to clay could exacerbate these problems, so it’s best to take a look at how he fares this week before considering backing him in the upcoming weeks.

Top Contenders and their Concerns

The 500-level ATP Barcelona has a strong field, as we find the top eight seeds that are in the world’s top 20. Despite that, it does lack Rafal Nadal, who is still injured, and there are many other strong contenders that have few questions to answer. Two-time finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas continues to struggle with a shoulder problem that has been labelled as the worst of his career. His defeat to Taylor Fritz in Monte Carlo was a proof of that, and at 8/1, we should pass. Casper Ruud is also far from his best, and despite his success in Estoril, he lost in straight sets to Jan-Lennard Struff in Monte Carlo. Again, at 10/1, he looks short.

Of the top four seeds, Jannik Sinner is the one who looks the most promising. The Top Seeds: Rune, Fritz, and Zverev

All three seeds in this week’s ATP Munich secured some valuable experience in last week’s Monte Carlo Masters as Holger Rune reached the final, Taylor Fritz the semifinals, and Alex Zverev did show some improvement despite losing in the last 16. All have what it takes to go all the way here, but there are some considerations to make before you get a short price on them.

Rune did need a physio during the match; he then lost to Rublev, and it won’t be a massive surprise if he withdraws from this tournament. Fritz did beat defending champion Tsitsipas, but he is not used to the 500-metre altitude in Munich and might struggle. Zverev, who has won two times here, at 10/3, doesn’t make any appeals given his recent performances. His transition to clay did show some potential, but he did lose to Daniil Medvedev, who isn’t known for his clay skills.

A Promising Contender: Jan-Lennard Struff

Our suggestion is to go with Jan-Lennard Struff. He was pretty impressive in Monte Carlo, where he defeated the likes of Albert Ramos-Vinolas, Alex de Minaur, and Casper Ruud. He was eventually halted by champion Rublev in the quarterfinals, but that run should give him confidence ahead of this week’s event. The altitude in Munich shouldn’t cause him problems, as his powerful serve and flat groundstrokes should do well in the thinner air. At 16/1, it appears to be the best bet here.

The ATP Tour has a new venue this week as Banja Luka takes on Belgrade. The outdoor clay tournament should have the same appeal, and we have Novak Djokovic, who can be backed, at the moment of writing, at 8/13 to win the title. Considering that Andrey Rublev will probably withdraw after his Monte Carlo success, the Serb’s odds are likely to shorten even further.

But Djokovic was already at even money to win in Monte Carlo last week but was defeated by Lorenzo Musetti. He didn’t look in great shape, which is hardly surprising considering that he hasn’t played on clay for 10 months. He will likely use this event to gain some form before facing more difficult tournaments in Madrid, Rome, and ultimately the French Open.

Djokovic Faces a Tough Opponent: Stan Wawrinka

In the first match, Djokovic will take on Stan Wawrinka, who has had a significant rivalry with him between 2014 and 2016. During that period, the Serb lost to Wawrinka in three of the four Grand Slams, and the latter has also won four of their last nine encounters. Wawrinka has been suffering several injuries in recent years, and the last time he faced Djokovic was back in 2016. However, there are signs that the three-time Slam champion might be heading towards form, after reaching the quarterfinals in both Rotterdam and Marseille and also winning outdoors in Indian Wells against Hoger Rune at the end of a very positive match.
