Nicolai Hojgaard To Win

Main Bet: Nicolai Hojgaard

Given the strength of his form and the fact that he has already won an island tournament at the Mauritius Open, Rasmus Hojgaard is unquestionably the player to beat, but at these prices, I like his brother NICOLAI HOJGAARD.

We discover more and more about these twin sensations as they advance in the sport, and for the time being, everything makes sense. Rasmus is more reliable due to his more well-rounded game, and his brother is right to respect how composed he is under pressure. Even if he did allow Guido Migliozzi to break through in Paris, that still holds true.

Nicolai is a star because of how strong he is, but he is not consistent and, some might say, not able to change. A par four or two has been brought to its knees, and he has generally bullied both the golf course and the competition, as he did to disastrous effect in the Middle East in February. This has helped him win both of his victories so far on the courses.

He runs the danger of being unable to use his preferred strategies in this situation, but I believe he may be able to. The first three par-fives should be easy, and the fourth, a par four, is the kind of hole where he might be one of the very few players who can attempt to approach a water-protected green. He could also be capable of taking a shot at the eighth, though it doesn’t seem probable that many will do that.

But what I really admire is that he is finally displaying a bit of that consistency, or at least giving some indication of it. In Rome, he was clear that he has improved a lot since he won on the same course the year before.

Even though he came in 37th, making the cut at Valderrama was above average and shows that he is growing up a little bit later than his brother. There should be some similarities with the 3 Canary Islands swing of 2021, where Jeff Winther finished third and ended up winning in Mallorca later that year. Nicolai is quite capable on the greens, though, and I do believe he’ll like it here. Hojgaard finished 15th and 4th and since than he has developed a lot.

He just finished in the top 15 halfway between Italy and France, capping off an incredible run of events for him. Currently ranked 67th in the Race to Dubai, he still has some work to do to guarantee that he plays in all of them, though a triumph at some point would not be unexpected. At this price he looks a great option for this week.

Andy Sullivan (Each-Way) To Win

£20 bet returns £85 (if placed) with Betvictor

Each Way Bet: Andy Sullivan

I have to talk about Andy Sullivan again. He was a confident favourite in France two starts before, but he had a terrible start that caused him to drop out of the competition. Sullivan bounced with an 11th the previous week, and it appears to be no more than a blip in an otherwise positive pattern. It does happen, and I should point out that Ryan Fox also played poorly the week before claiming the Dunhill Links, and Adrian Otaegui, who was also chosen in France, missed the cut in Scotland before making a strong comeback.

If we examine O’Sullivan’s body of work, we can see that he has made eight cuts out of nine, with Paris being the exception. He also led after the first round of the prestigious BMW PGA Championship, and this past week at Valderrama, he put on his best performance to date, finishing fifth in his approaches and 13th in strokes gained off the tee.

There isn’t anything to be concerned about in Sullivan’s recent performances, either with his putting or his game around the green. He simply appears to be a gentleman getting back to his old self. He’ll be eager to compete in Dubai, where he has a strong track record and has historically performed best in low-scoring events, as seen by his victory at Hanbury Manor in 2020.

His current goal is to keep his card, and over the past week, he has gotten closer to that goal. Despite being ranked 109th, he still has work to do, and given that one victory at the Portugal Masters certainly should have been two, he has no excuses going into the next two weeks. The weather is perfect, so watch him go if he can warm up that putter.
Once more, Andy Sullivan is almost at his peak.
