Main Bet: Adrian Otaegui

This tournament should have made its debut on the European Tour last summer, and despite a considerable delay, it is finally here and will take place at Galgorm Castle. The layout of the course is modern, and it is also tree-lined. Our pick for this week is Spain’s Adrian Otaegui, who seems a bit underestimated and should be shorter. His price is so high that he missed the cut last week, but we are not too concerned about this as he has never shown great form at Celtic Manor. Before that event, he finished second in the Scandinavian Mixed and followed that performance with a top 30s in the BMW International, Irish Open and Scottish Open.

During this period, his Strokes Gained Approach and Around the Greens has been impressive, and he was into contention at some point in each of those events. This will be his debut at Galgorm Castle, but he has done well in similar tree-lined courses with a win at Rinkven International, in addition to second positions at Nurtau, Geneve, Lake Karrinyup, Diamond CC, Hanbury Manor and Vallda. Jon Rahm, who is also from the Basque Country, has always said to feel at home in Ireland, and Otaegui is also from the same region and can add more glory to the Spanish’ contingency.

Each Way Bet: Alejandro Canizares

Our second pick for this week is Alejandro Canizares, who is also a tree-lined specialist. After surprising everyone with a win on his only fourth European Tour start in 2006 at Moscow Country club, he has done consistently well at Hong Hong, Kingston Heath, Eichenried, Kuala Lumpur, Sevilla, Lake Karrinyup, Wentworth, Glendower, PGA Catalunya, Valderrama and Milano.

He hasn’t been in brilliant form recently, but in the last year or so has done well in courses similar to the one we have this week. He is undoubtedly someone to consider when there are plenty of trees and was also tied 35th at Celtic Manor in last yea’s Irish Open, in what was the first visit to that course. He ranked ninth for SG Approach and indeed can be in contention this week, so worth backing him at this high price on a course that should help him highlight his qualities.
