A Midtable Clash with Promise: Internacional vs Palmeiras in the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A

Key Stats
– Internacional have won 15 of their last 19 Serie A home fixtures.
– Palmeiras are on their longest winless run (four matches) since 2020.
– Internacional have dropped only four points when scoring first this season.

Internacional, also known as Colorado, are on a mission to put a stop to their two-match winless spell in the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A. They face a stiff challenge as they prepare to play host to Palmeiras at the Estadio Beira-Rio this Sunday. In the previous round, Internacional succumbed to a 2-0 defeat against Fluminense, while Palmeiras settled for a 1-1 draw against Flamengo. This setback has placed Internacional three points behind Palestra in the race for the top spots.

A Tale of Two Teams

This season has been a testing one for Internacional. After 14 league fixtures, they find themselves in the 12th position with 21 points, which is three points fewer than what they had managed at the same stage last season. For much of 2023, Internacional have adopted a defensive approach, often playing it safe and focusing more on maintaining a lead rather than extending it.

However, when Internacional scores the opening goal, they seldom squander their advantages. They have won four domestic matches this season when scoring first and have twice emerged victorious after conceding the opening goal. Their home form, in particular, is something to be admired, with Internacional winning 15 of their 19 Serie A fixtures at Estadio Beira-Rio since June 2022, suffering just a single defeat in Porto-Alegre during this period.

On the other hand, Palmeiras’ title defence has hit a rough patch in 2023. They currently find themselves on their longest winless streak (four matches) since 2020, having dropped six points when leading in the second half. This slump in form has seen them suffer two defeats in their first 14 matches of the season, already one fewer than their total losses in the entirety of the 2022 Serie A campaign. They are also without a victory in their previous four matches across all competitions.

Key Players to Watch

Internacional’s team might be without Pedro Henrique due to a thigh injury until late July, while Mauricio is still a few weeks away from a complete recovery from his muscle injury. However, they still have the likes of John Victor, who impressed with three clean sheets in their previous Serie A home fixture against Cruzeiro, and Wanderson, their leading goalscorer, to rely upon.

Palmeiras have been boosted by the recent performances of Joaquin Piquerez, who scored the solitary goal in their loss to Sao Paulo, and Dudu, who found the back of the net in their draw against Flamengo. They will be looking for more of the same from these key players in this upcoming clash against Internacional.

Match Predictions

Based on their current forms and historical records, I will go with the following predictions for this match:

Prediction 1: Both Teams to Score

The first prediction is rooted in the offensive capabilities and recent defensive vulnerabilities of both sides. Internacional and Palmeiras, over the course of the season, have proven they can hit the back of the net, but have also displayed defensive inconsistencies that have often seen them concede goals. Internacional have scored in every one of their home fixtures while Palmeiras, despite a rough patch, have still managed to score in 71% of their away games.

These facts suggest that a bet on both teams to score could be a viable option. Moreover, Palmeiras’ defence, which once dominated the league in terms of clean sheets, is now struggling, having kept just a single clean sheet in their last seven games. On the other hand, Internacional have seen both teams score in three out of their last four home games. Hence, given these facts, a bet on both teams to score would make sense in the context of the current forms and performances of both sides.

Prediction 2: Correct Score 2-1 in Favour of Internacional

Looking at the historical data and recent form, a 2-1 victory for Internacional seems to be a feasible result. Despite Internacional’s recent dip in form, their record at home against Palmeiras offers some encouragement. They won their previous encounter at home with Palmeiras 3-0 and have been strong at home in the recent past, winning 15 of their last 19 Serie A fixtures.

On the other hand, Palmeiras are currently enduring a tough spell, without a win in their last four league matches and a shaky defence that has conceded more goals than at this point last season. However, they have been able to score in most of their away matches, indicating they could at least get a consolation goal in this fixture. Hence, a 2-1 result in favour of Internacional might be a feasible correct score bet.

Prediction 3: Goal Scorer Prediction – Wanderson

As for the goalscorer prediction, Wanderson of Internacional presents himself as a likely candidate. Wanderson is Internacional’s leading goal scorer for the season. He might not have scored recently, but his record suggests that he is due for a goal.

His last goal came in a winning effort against Vasco da Gama, highlighting his knack for scoring crucial goals. Despite their sturdy defense, Palmeiras have been prone to conceding goals recently, suggesting that Wanderson could find an opportunity to score. It’s always a risk to predict a specific goalscorer, but given Wanderson’s proven track record this season, he stands out as the most likely candidate to find the net in the upcoming match.
