How is the Champions League structured?

European leagues send a determined number of clubs to the Champions League, based on the league’s quality. This allocation varies, with leagues sending between one to four clubs. While some clubs must compete in qualifying rounds for a position, others, based on their ranking, enter directly into the group stages. It is important to note that from the 2024/25 season the Champions League will change and it won’t have group stages anymore but it will be in a league format (see below for more info).

Currently, following the qualifying rounds, the group stage ensues. This stage comprises eight groups, with each group having four clubs. Every club faces its group counterparts twice, both home and away. From each group, the top two progress to the knockout stages. Securing the top spot in your group offers a strategic advantage, as it pits you against a team that finished second in their respective group.

The knockout phases consist of the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and then the final. These stages involve two matches per tie, a home and an away fixture, with the exception of the final, which is a singular, decisive match.

Changes to the Champions League Format:

Starting from the 2024/25 season, the Champions League will feature 36 clubs, all competing in a single league table, as opposed to the previous format of 32 clubs divided into eight groups. The season’s commencement will see a draw, but it’s to set the fixtures for the league-phase: each club plays eight matches, split evenly between home and away.

These 36 teams are distributed across four pots, with Pot 1 hosting the UCL titleholder and the eight clubs with the highest coefficients. Notably, domestic league champions and the UEL victors will not automatically be in Pot 1. The subsequent pots are arranged based on club coefficients. Each club faces two teams from every pot, both home and away. Therefore, Pot 1 clubs could play against two fellow Pot 1 clubs.

Generally, clubs from the same country won’t compete against each other. But for larger leagues, there may be exceptions to avoid scheduling complications.

At the league’s end:
1. Top eight teams advance directly to the round of 16.
2. Teams ranked 9th to 24th compete in playoffs for the remaining eight round of 16 slots.
3. Teams from 25th to 36th positions are out of European competitions.
4. Unlike previous rules, clubs eliminated from the Champions League won’t enter the Europa League.

For the knockout stages, there’ll be one draw for the round of 16 onwards. Teams will be seeded based on their league-phase rank, and there won’t be country protection. The league-phase rank is crucial as it determines the path a team will take in the knockout rounds.

Which teams will qualify for the Champions League in the new format?

The top four Premier League teams will secure automatic spots in the Champions League group stage, consistent with recent years. This is also true for LaLiga, Bundesliga, and Serie A. A fifth team can qualify if England ranks within the two leagues with the highest coefficients, earning an extra UCL slot.

This is based on league performance, not club coefficients. Historically, the Premier League has been in the top two for six out of the last seven seasons, with Germany narrowly beating England in 2019-20 by a single win.

When is each Champions League stage?

The group stage runs from September to December. The dates for the knock-out rounds are normally as follow. Please note there might be some slight variations during years with major summer tournaments:

February 2023 – Round of 16, 1st leg

March – Round of 16, 2nd leg

April – Quarter-finals, 1st leg

April – Quarter-finals, 2nd leg

May – Semi-finals, 1st leg

May – Semi-finals, 2nd leg

June – Final

Our Champions League predictions will cover each and every matches in all details so stay tuned.

When is the Champions League final?

The Champions League final will normally take place at the end of May or at the beginning of June. The exact date will depend on whether there will be a major summer tournament or not. The match is usually on Saturday night at 20:00 (UK Time) and the venue is changed every year.

Where to watch the Champions League

UK viewers can watch the entirety of the Champions League, including the final, on TNT Sport.

Who has won the Champions League most often?

From the time the Champions League was established in 1955 (it was called the European Cup back then), Real Madrid lead the tally with a remarkable 14 titles to their name. AC Milan trails with 7 championships, while Liverpool and Bayern Munich are tied, having lifted the trophy 6 times each.
