Scotland vs Spain Lineup

Scotland started the new campaign with a convincing 3-0 win over Cyprus on Saturday, and Steve Clarke will be hoping to make headlines tonight in what is expected to be a much more difficult tie against Spain. In the match against Cyprus, it was Scott McTominay who was the protagonist, as the Manchester United player came off the bench and netted two goals that moved the matter clearly in favour of the Scottish side.

That result was important as Steve Clarke’s men have been drawn in a difficult group A, which, alongside Cyprus and Spain, also has Norway and Georgia. Luis de la Fuente started his reign as Spain’s head coach with a convincing 3-0 win over Norway on Saturday.

Despite the Scandinavians missing Erling Haaland, that was a solid performance for La Roja, who responded well to the departure of Luis Enrique and showed their commitment to having a successful qualifying campaign. The last time Spain won a major tournament was in 2012, so there is an appetite to see things improve after recent years of disappointment.

Scotland vs Spain Betting Prediction: John McGinn to be carded

TEST

£20 returns £180

Odds corrects at time of posting and subject to change

The first bet I would like to make on this game is on John McGinn to be carded. He is playing a more advanced role when featuring for Scotland compared with when he plays in the Premier League with Aston Villa. Under Clarke, he has the number ten role, and that helps him to be more positive, and in fact he did score against Cyprus. In that position, however, he also committed more fouls—three against Cyprus.

If we extend our look to the last eight competitive international games, we can see that he had at least one foul in seven of them, and in the last World Cup qualifiers, he was booked two times in only 10 games. He also picked up a yellow card in the last Premier League match against Bournemouth, so he surely looks a great value here also considering the quality of the Spanish’ midfielder.

Scotland vs Spain Betting Tips: Spain to win to nil

TEST

£20 returns £340

Odds corrects at time of posting and subject to change

If we look at the statistics, we might expect Scotland to score at some point since they have done so in nine consecutive home games. I believe, however, that there is a good value to back the visitors to win without conceding, and the reason is the change of management. Compared with Luis Enrique, who was more focused on the attacking part of the game, Luis de la Fuente likes to collect clean sheets and have a more balanced approach.

We have seen against Norway that despite leading 3-0, they haven’t lost focus at the back. You might argue that with Haaland playing, things could have gone differently, but Scotland doesn’t have Haaland either, and furthermore, the Blue and Whites have lost three of their last five meetings against Spain, with the last success dating back to 1984. Spain have scored in 11 consecutive away games if we exclude tournament finals, and against Norway they conceded just 2 shots on target, so back them to deliver another solid performance at Hamden Park.

Scotland vs Spain Value Bet: Alvaro Morata to score first

TEST

£20 returns £680

Odds corrects at time of posting and subject to change

Despite my belief that Spain will head away with the three points, I do not think it will be a hammering for the Scots. Let’s not forget that they do have a pretty solid record at home, having won seven of the last nine games. So this is likely going to be a game decided by fine margins, one that should be perfect for a player like Alvaro Morata, capable of scoring decisive goals, possibly the one that will unlock the game.

Morata didn’t score against Norway but has been in pretty good form lately for Atletico Madrid, having scored 3 goals in the last 3 games and also delivered an assist. When playing for Spain, he has been very consistent, and it is not a surprise to see that Luis de la Fuente will rely on him. The Atletico Madrid forward has scored three goals in four World Cup games, scoring the first one in close games against Germany and Japan, so he looks great value with William Hill, who have boosted his price from 7/2 to 9/2 at the moment of writing.
