The Scottish Giants: Rangers FC
Rangers FC are certainly leaving no stone unturned in their quest to dethrone Celtic and capture the Scottish Premiership title. Their commendable efforts under Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the 2021-22 Europa League have however secured them a place in the upcoming Champions League qualification rounds. Following their mixed pre-season form which saw them both win and lose at Ibrox, manager Michael Beale has his sights set on an improved performance against Olympiacos.
To bolster their squad, Rangers have acquired Leon Balogun, Dujon Sterling, and Kieran Dowell from England, with Dowell notably arriving from Norwich City on a free transfer. The Greek Contenders: Olympiacos
Olympiacos, on the other hand, are driven by their ambition to recapture the Greek Super League title after a third-place finish last season behind AEK Athens and Panathinaikos. They are set to engage in fierce battles under the guidance of 42-year-old manager Diego Martinez, who left Espanyol following their relegation from La Liga in June.
Much like the Gers, Olympiacos have been active this pre-season and will head to Ibrox after drawing their latest game against Sabah of Azerbaijan. They are also preparing for the third qualifying round of the Europa League in August, having failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since the 2018-19 season.
Form Guide and Injury Update
Rangers come into this game with a mixed bag of results in their recent outings, recording two victories, one draw, and one loss in their last four matches in all competitions. Olympiacos, however, have an edge in the form guide, having lost just twice in their last six games across all competitions.
Injury woes have followed Rangers into the new season with Steven Davis ruled out until next month due to a cruciate ligament injury. Ryan Kent’s transfer to Fenerbahce presents a further challenge for Beale, who now looks to Cyriel Dessers to light up Ibrox this season.
Olympiacos have injury troubles of their own. Striker Ahmed Hassan Koka remains sidelined with a knee injury, and Doron Leidner, who sustained a serious cruciate ligament injury while on loan at Austria Wien, is set to miss most of the 2023-24 term.
