A Desperate Battle

Key Stats
– Belgium’s recent victory run includes 10 points from their first four matches.
– Estonia have conceded a whopping 11 goals in their last four qualifiers.
– Romelu Lukaku stands on the cusp of his 20th European Championship qualifying goal.

Norway and Georgia will lock horns on Tuesday night as both teams aim to strengthen their positions in Group A of the Euro 2024 qualifiers. While both teams sit neck-and-neck with four points each, they’ve had contrasting fortunes and journeys up to this juncture.

A Rocky Road for Norway

Currently residing in third place, the Norwegians have had a tumultuous time in Group A. Out of the four matches they’ve played, victory has eluded them three times, placing them just two points adrift of second-placed Spain. That said, Spain have the luxury of a game in hand, which could further complicate Norway’s aspirations.

The Lions began their campaign with a less-than-ideal 3-0 loss to Spain, followed by a draw against Georgia and a defeat to Scotland. However, redemption was at hand as they emerged victorious against Cyprus with a 3-1 scoreline. Adding to their recent form, they annihilated Jordan 6-0 in a friendly match. History isn’t particularly in favour of the Norwegians, who’ve only managed to reach the European Championship finals once, back in 2000, and haven’t been part of the World Cup scene since 1998.

Georgia’s Pursuit of Uncharted Territories

Georgia, on the other hand, sit fourth in the group, only separated from Norway on goal difference. Their recent 7-1 thrashing by Spain was a setback, but their journey began on a brighter note with a 1-1 draw against Norway and a 2-1 win over Cyprus. Willy Sagnol’s team experienced another dip with a 2-0 loss to Scotland, but they’re undeterred. Qualifying for the Euro Championship would be a historic feat for the Crusaders, having never reached the finals of any major tournament.

These two nations have crossed paths only four times, with Norway edging the encounters, winning three out of four. Their last Group A clash culminated in a draw.

Key Players and Formations

Erling Haaland, the Manchester City dynamo, missed the Jordan fixture but will undoubtedly be the focal point in Norway’s attack. With an enviable record of 24 goals in 25 appearances for his nation, he is expected to be supported by Markus Solbakken and Jorgen Strand Larsen upfront. At the heart of the midfield, the trio of Martin Odegaard, Patrick Berg, and Fredrik Aursnes will take control, while Leo Skiri Ostigard is set to anchor the defence.

For Georgia, following their hefty defeat against Spain, coach Sagnol might be inclined to make a few tactical adjustments. Likely starters include Anzor Mekvabishvili, Zuriko Davitashvili, and Lasha Dvali. Giorgi Chakvetadze, after his recent goal against Spain, could make it to the starting lineup alongside their star player, Napoli’s Khvicha Kvartashkelia.

Predictions

  1. Outcome of the Match: Given the recent form and performances of both teams, a prediction favouring a draw seems apt. Norway’s recent victories might give them the confidence, but Georgia’s resilience could balance the scales.
  2. Scoreline: Based on both teams’ attacking and defensive prowess, a 1-1 scoreline appears to be a reasonable guess.
  3. Goal Scorer: Given his recent form and prolific goal-scoring record, Erling Haaland is poised to find the back of the net during this encounter.
