• Liverpool’s home run sets the tone: fourteen consecutive UEFA home wins with two or more goals in thirteen of them, a pattern that places creators like Wirtz at the centre of the outcome.

• Atletico remain a live threat: they have scored in all four matches this season and in fifteen of their last sixteen group games, suggesting the kind of trading state that amplifies assist chances late on.

• Injury context matters: Atletico saw four players forced off against Villarreal, while Liverpool can add Isak from the bench; that swing in freshness supports a late creative moment rather than early control.

Anthony Gordon 2+ Shots On Target

Reasoning
Gordon’s aggressive attacking role and Newcastle’s need to chase three points combine perfectly here—at 4/1, his ability to hit the target twice is tremendous value and well worth backing.

Anfield under the lights is not a venue so much as a declaration of intent, and Liverpool are arriving into this Champions League opener with that slightly smug, wind-in-the-hair swagger that only a perfect start grants you. Four Premier League matches, four wins, each sealed in those nervy, last ten minutes that make you age a year yet grin the second the whistle goes.

It’s been more grind than gloss at times, the kind of late heroics that thrill neutrals and terrify cardiologists, but the holders are exactly where they wanted to be: top of the pile and kicking off Europe at home. The late penalty at Burnley, tucked in by Mohamed Salah in stoppage time, summed it up—patient, stubborn, not pretty, but ruthlessly effective when it matters.

Atletico Madrid bring their own brand of theatre, of course. People lazily call them defensive, as if that’s a crime; truthfully, they are masters of control when they hit their rhythm. The tricky bit is they have only just found it. One win in La Liga so far, and that came at the weekend as Pablo Barrios and Nico Gonzalez struck in a 2-0 tidy-up job against Villarreal. Before that, it was stumbles and shrugs: a loss to Espanyol, stalemates with Elche and Alaves. That said, they tend to be pretty dependable in these opening Champions League nights, rarely giving much away, usually scoring enough to make you sweat. Tradition tells you they will be compact, awkward, and ready to pounce if you get sloppy between the lines.

Arne Slot’s side are nursing a few moving pieces. Alexander Isak is finally expected to be in the squad, if not from the off; Alexis Mac Allister had his minutes managed after a thump at Burnley; Curtis Jones is sidelined; and Jeremie Frimpong is likely to rejoin the starting picture with Dominik Szoboszlai capable of switching back inside. There’s a certain menace to Liverpool’s likely shape: Alisson behind Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk, with Andrew Robertson flying on one edge and Frimpong streaking on the other, then Ryan Gravenberch and Szoboszlai steering behind an attack line that could feature Salah, Florian Wirtz and Cody Gakpo in support of Hugo Ekitike—while Isak lurks, ready for his first bow if the timing suits.

Diego Simeone has his own headaches. Villarreal cost Atletico four bodies mid-game—Julian Alvarez, Gonzalez, Robin Le Normand and David Hancko all had to be withdrawn—while Jose Gimenez, Alex Baena and Thiago Almada are out. Much will hinge on Jan Oblak and the back four’s ability to withstand Liverpool’s late surges, and on Antoine Griezmann and Alexander Sorloth threatening in the channels when Atletico break. It’s not exactly a mystery how this will look; the question is who can impose their version of it for longer, and perhaps which bench delivers the big shove after the hour mark.

Now, why are we planting our flag here? Settle in, because there’s a proper case—not hype, not guesswork, just the football.

The beating heart of Liverpool’s early-season story is late control. They are not blowing teams away from minute one; they are setting traps, pinning territory, and turning the screw when tired minds make jittery choices. That pattern fits Anfield’s European persona beautifully, and it suits a player like Florian Wirtz even more. In Slot’s projected set-up, Wirtz tends to operate between Salah and Gakpo, finding those annoying half-spaces inside the full-backs where defenders don’t want to be dragged. With Gravenberch knitting the first pass and Szoboszlai able to step in or step wide depending on what the press offers, the German creator becomes the hinge on which Liverpool’s final-third polish rests.

Atletico do not crumble; they bend. They are historically proud of their clean-sheet ratio under Simeone, and the numbers in this very competition say they shut teams out in a hefty portion of their games. But there’s context this time. Their start has been sticky, and the weekend win came with a nasty bill of fatigue and sprains. If Le Normand is only borderline fit and Hancko’s ankle is a doubt after already being used from the bench and then withdrawn, it creates selection flux in front of Oblak. The back four—often an anthem of reliability—may feature hurried combinations, and hurried combinations tend to make conservative choices. That’s lovely news for a technician like Wirtz, who thrives when opponents sit a step too deep and leave the diagonal lanes unattended.

Liverpool’s European form at home, for what it’s worth, has been relentless. They have taken the last fourteen home games in UEFA competition and scored at least twice in thirteen of them. That output pattern doesn’t promise a specific scorer, but it does hint strongly at creators touching the ball plenty around the box. Wirtz’s task is not complicated: receive on the half-turn, bait a centre-half out of line, and feed the runner hitting the seam. With Salah’s timing towards the penalty spot razor-sharp and Gakpo sneaking off the blind shoulder, plus the option of Ekitike pulling near side or Isak arriving later on, there are multiple targets for the final pass. The bet doesn’t need two or three; it needs one telling ball hit at the right weight.

Atletico’s attacking threat is also part of the logic here. They are not arriving to cling for dear life; they have scored in all four matches this season and—this is crucial—they have a long record of finding the net in group-stage assignments. If Los Rojiblancos nick one, the game-state becomes even more friendly for a creator. Liverpool will escalate the tempo, the full-backs will stay high, and the ball will live near the Atletico area. Wirtz gets more touches in the zone that matters and more constellation options swirling around him to combine through pressure.

There’s also a practical, slightly cheeky point: Salah’s penalty at Burnley masked a deeper rhythm—Liverpool are making a habit of scoring late. Tired legs struggle with players who thread needles, and Wirtz is a needle-threader. Atletico’s midfield unit, which may have to include Conor Gallagher on the left if Gonzalez doesn’t make it, plus Koke and Barrios working the centre, will track and harry all evening. But when the counters turn into repeated defensive waves, the short-distance perception and disguise that Wirtz brings is harder to smother than, say, an aerial bombardment. He isn’t going to launch forty-yard diagonals; he’s going to glide in a five-yard pocket, look you off, and slip a runner into daylight.

Tactically, the moving pieces tilt in our favour. Frimpong returning to the XI from right-back changes the whole geometry; his surges pull the nearest Atletico wide player back and force the full-back to make a grim choice: track the overlap or step toward Wirtz receiving inside. Either decision opens a channel. On the opposite flank, Robertson has a similar gravity, and as soon as both flanks are asking questions, central defenders lose their comfort with the distances between them. That’s the window when an assist is born—Wirtz taking a touch with his instep, a quick wall pass with Szoboszlai, Salah darting, Ekitike near-post, Gakpo arriving late. Pick your poison.

You want numbers? Liverpool have torn through their last fourteen UEFA home fixtures with a metronomic habit of scoring more than once. Atletico have still scored in fifteen of their last sixteen group matches, which suggests trade. Liverpool’s league form is spotless—twelve points—and while the goals have come late, the pressure metrics (territory, wave count, shots in the final quarter) point to a team that overwhelms in the end. An assist prop leans on volume plus quality; Wirtz has both in this context.

Would an early Isak cameo change anything? If anything, it sweetens the pot. A late substitution of a top-line forward increases the number of true runners across the six-yard channel and the far-post zone. Wirtz doesn’t lose touches; he gains better options to reward.

BettingTips4You.com expert quote – Steve Harrington (UK): “If this becomes the usual Anfield slow boil—and it normally does—Wirtz is the lock-picker. Give him repeats around the D, and one of Salah, Gakpo or a striker will cash the invitation.”

There’s always risk. Atletico can suffocate rhythm when they marry compactness with clean exits through Koke, Barrios and the wider outlets like Marcos Llorente. Yet even in their best versions, they concede areas that Liverpool specifically enjoy prodding. In a match primed for a late red surge and with Liverpool’s creators positioned perfectly between the lines, 7/2 on a Wirtz assist is the sensible bit of ambition.

As for the scoreline, it feels like a game where Atletico punch at least once—Griezmann is too clever not to slide into those pockets and Sorloth is a nuisance on crosses—yet Liverpool’s habit of stacking pressure should prevail. The hosts have won four on the bounce, and even if they have flirted with chaos, the energy in Europe often tidies the sloppiness. A 3-1 home win reads about right: one scare endured, two big moments created from the right half-space, and a late clincher when Atletico must throw numbers and the home side counter-snaps them.
