Montenegro’s Battle to Regain Stature: A Lithuanian Roadblock Ahead

Key Stats
– Montenegro dominated Lithuania 4-1 in their last meeting in October 2018.
– Lithuania haven’t celebrated a win in their last 13 matches.
– Montenegro’s lone group victory came away against Bulgaria.

Montenegro, once a powerhouse in international football, find themselves looking to rediscover lost form as they gear up to face Lithuania. It hasn’t been the smoothest decade for the Brave Falcons, with their highest accolade being the promotion to Tier B of the UEFA Nations League. Yet, they remain hopeful of making a mark in Euro 2024’s qualifiers, given the relatively open nature of their group.

Lithuania, sitting at the foot of the Euro 2024 qualification group, are desperately seeking an end to their winless streak spanning 13 matches. Notably, their defence has been a silver lining, having not let in more than two goals in any of their past 10 games over 15 months. Historically, the last time these nations met in the Nations League in October 2018, Montenegro secured a dominant 4-1 victory. However, Lithuania now believes they’ve bridged the gap in quality.

Recent Form

Diving into the form books, Montenegro’s campaign has seen them secure a sole victory against Bulgaria while drawing against the likes of Hungary. A scenario where Montenegro overcomes Lithuania and Serbia trumps Hungary would see them leapfrog into a better position in the group. However, the weight of just a single victory in eight games isn’t ideal, and Miodrag Radulovic is well aware of the mountain they need to climb.

Lithuania, on the other hand, managed to eke out a draw against Bulgaria, but suffered a 2-0 defeat to Hungary in their last outing. Their Euro 2024 qualifying journey, thus far, has been less than promising with two losses and a draw.

Team News and Expected Lineups

Edgaras Jankauskas, armed with his preferred starting XI from the Hungary game, is poised to stick with the same team, with potential inclusions of Pijus Sirvys and Modestas Vorobjovas. Montenegro’s Radulovic, pleased with the performance against Hungary, could favour Nikola Krstovic over Stefan Mugosa up top, keeping Sead Haksabanovic as a likely substitute, all within a 3-5-2 tactical setup.

Lithuania’s Predicted XI: Gertmonas; Lekiatas, Kazukolovas; Kilmavicius, Tutyskinas; Gineitis, Uzela; Jankauskas, Sirgedas, Sesplaukis; Paulauskas

Montenegro’s Predicted XI: Mijatovic; Vujacic, Savic, Tomasevic; Vesovic, Jankovic, Savicevic, Scekic, Vukcevic; Jovetic, Krstovic

BettingTips4You Expert Rating Insights

Montenegro’s Nikola Krstovic, with an average BettingTips4You Expert Rating of 6.97 and their solitary goal in the qualification, will undoubtedly be a player to watch. Defensively, Stefan Savic boasts a remarkable rating of 7.50.

On Lithuania’s side, goalkeeper Edvinas Gertmonas, with a rating of 8.40, stands out. Interestingly, Edvinas Girdvainis, a defender, is their top scorer with a single goal, highlighting their struggles upfront.

Predictions

  1. Outcome of the Game: The statistical leanings suggest Montenegro will have the upper hand. They secured their only group win away against Bulgaria and have a history of triumphing in away games, as evidenced by their wins against Latvia and Gibraltar in the previous qualifiers. Prediction: Montenegro to Win
  2. Correct Score Prediction: Considering Lithuania’s defensive solidity, not conceding more than twice in their recent 10 matches, but Montenegro’s historical advantage, a 2-0 win for Montenegro seems plausible.
  3. Goalscorer Prediction: Given his current form and past performances, Nikola Krstovic seems the most likely candidate to find the net for Montenegro.
