FSV Mainz 05 vs Schalke Predictions

A Crucial Clash Affecting Both European Dreams and Relegation Fears

Key Stats
– Mainz have won just three of their 12 home meetings against Schalke.
– Schalke have won only one of their 14 away games this season.
– There have been only 16 goals scored in the last 10 encounters between Mainz and Schalke.

Mainz 05 hosts Schalke 04 at the MEWA-Arena on Friday night for a huge Bundesliga match that will have implications for both European aspirations and the relegation battle. Mainz’s European hopes took a hit last week, while Schalke’s survival hopes did get a boost, and it would be interesting to see how the two teams will react to the last games.

Mainz’s Pursuit of European Qualification

Last week’s stalemate was a rare instance for Bo Svensson’s side, as they failed to score for the first time since their previous clash with Schalke back in November, before the World Cup break.

That was a disappointing result, especially as it came after their impressive 3-1 win over reigning champions Bayern Munich just a week earlier. Winning this clash would be very important, especially as they face a challenging end of the season run with away games against the likes of Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund.

Schalke’s Struggle for Survival and Poor Away Form

Despite their recent woes, Mainz have a notoriously poor record against Schalke, having won only three of their 12 home meetings. This history may offer Schalke some much-needed confidence as they fight to avoid relegation. Recent performances have boosted their hopes of surviving, as they were able to win back-to-back matches for the first time this term, including a 2-1 win over Werder Bremen last weekend.

In that match, they showed great resilience as they came back from behind to win the game, with late goals from Sepp van den Berg and Dominick Drexler. Despite that, their away form remains their weak spot of the season, as they have managed to win just one of their 14 away games.

The situation at the back of the Bundesliga table is very congested, as there are only four points separating the 13th and 17th places in the Bundesliga, so any point could make the whole difference. It is difficult, however, to believe that Thomas Reis will resolve their problems as they come to this match on the back of two consecutive away games without scoring.

Injury Concerns for Both Teams

Mainz’s Silvan Widmer suffered an ankle injury in the defeat against Wolfsburg last weekend and won’t be available for this clash, and the same is true for Jonathan Burkardt.

Schalke have several injury concerns, with Moritz Jenz doubtful and Cedric Brunner out with a shoulder injury. Reis will also be without Tim Skarke, Soichiro Kozuki, Justin Heekeren, and Eder Balanta for this fixture.

Mainz To Bounce Back

Despite their recent setback, Mainz will seek an immediate response and should have what it takes to do so at home. Make no mistake, though, Schalke are fighting for their lives and will do what they can to stay in the game.

With just 16 goals in the last 10 meetings between these teams and Schalke being the league’s lowest scorers, goals may be hard to come by, particularly for the visitors. Nevertheless, we do expect them to find a goal at some point given the defensive vulnerabilities of the hosts back line. Backing a 2-1 win for Mainz looks like the best bet.
