How does the Europa League work?

Let’s dive into the Europa League intricacies! View the Europa League as the Champions League’s sibling – slightly junior but no less captivating. The paths to qualification are numerous and varied.

In Europe’s leading leagues, teams that finish just outside the Champions League spots are granted Europa League berths. Additionally, lifting a domestic trophy can be a golden ticket to this competition. Understandably, in leagues of a lower rank, fewer spots are available.

The journey starts with four preliminary rounds, predominantly featuring clubs from lesser-known leagues, those narrowly missing out on the Champions League from top-tier leagues, and a contingent of 10 teams that didn’t make the cut in the Champions League play-offs.

The main event kicks off with a bustling 48-team group stage, comprising 12 groups with four teams each. Within these groups, every team locks horns twice with their rivals – hosting one and visiting for the other. The cream of the crop, the top two, advance further.

Next up is the round of 32 in the knockout phase. Here, the group stage survivors are joined by an influx of eight teams who clinched the 3rd spot in their respective Champions League groups. In this segment, each tie comprises two matches, barring the finale which is a single, defining battle.

Stay tuned as our Europa League tips accompany you from the initial group clashes right up to the grand climax.

How will Europa League format change?

Currently, the Europa League group stage houses 48 teams, segmented into twelve clusters of four. However, commencing from the 2024/25 season, clubs won’t be contesting in a limited group but will be part of a unified league table.

In this redesigned league phase, rather than the traditional model where teams grapple with three distinct opponents both home and away, they’ll spar against eight unique adversaries. These matches will be evenly split between home and away fixtures. The determination of these eight rivals will be grounded in an initial seeding across four pots. From each pot, teams will be assigned two competitors, ensuring they face one adversary at home and the other on foreign soil from each pot.

This reshaping not only diversifies the competition for clubs but also amplifies the anticipation for fans, offering them the thrill of witnessing top-tier clashes earlier and more frequently throughout the tournament. Furthermore, this ensures a heightened competitive edge in every encounter, making every match a spectacle in its own right.

When is each Europa League stage?

Qualifying rounds unfold throughout the summer, with the group stage running from September to November 2022. Knockout round dates are usually played during these periods, which might be slightly different during years with important summer tournaments:

📅 Feb: Round of 32 – Leg 1
📅 Feb: Round of 32 – Leg 2
📅 March: Round of 16 – Leg 1
📅 March: Round of 16 – Leg 2
📅 April: Quarter-finals – Leg 1
📅 April: Quarter-finals – Leg 2
📅 May: Semi-finals – Leg 1
📅 May: Semi-finals – Leg 2

Stay tuned for in-depth Europa League predictions!

When is the Europa League final?

The final of the Europa League is normally scheduled for the end of May with the hosting stadium that changes every year.

How to Watch the Europa League in the UK?

In the UK, football enthusiasts can catch the Europa League games, up to and including the final, on TNT Sport. Although the Europa League is not available, you can also watch plenty of European matches and place bets simultaneously on several bookmakers. As and when available, we will include the streaming option in our match predictions pages.

Who has won the Europa League most times?

Since the Europa League was established in 1971 (it was called the UEFA Cup then), Sevilla have claimed the title seven times, making them the most decorated team in the competition. Other clubs like Liverpool, Juventus, Inter Milan, and Atletico Madrid have each clinched the trophy three times.

A glance at the recent past winners:
