Celtic Park is preparing for another European night as Celtic welcome Braga in what feels like a fascinating test of resilience and nerve. Brendan Rodgers’s side are coming into this clash on the back of a stalemate against Hibernian, a game where they utterly dominated possession but failed to break through. That has been the story of their season so far: rock-solid at the back but oddly blunt going forward. You cannot fault their defensive stability – two goals conceded across their last six matches is proof enough – yet fans are starting to wonder where the ruthless finishing has gone.
Braga, meanwhile, are a strange beast right now. They can look composed and structured one week, then flimsy the next. Their 1-0 defeat against Nacional summed up their issues: plenty of the ball but very little bite, and a defence that simply cannot keep things tight. Conceding in five of their last six games is not the record you want before heading to a stadium like Celtic Park. Still, with players like Ricardo Horta and Amine El Ouazzani in the side, there’s always the possibility of them landing a blow. This one has the look of a chess match where every mistake could prove decisive.

Celtic have become experts at keeping things tight. Eight clean sheets in their last eleven matches is no fluke – their defensive organisation under Rodgers has been exceptional. Kasper Schmeichel may not have had much to do against Hibs, but his presence provides calmness. Braga, on the other hand, are leaking goals but not exactly free-scoring themselves. They’ve managed just one goal in each of their last two defeats in the Primeira Liga, and even their win against Feyenoord in Europe came via a solitary strike. With Jonatás Noro out, their depth is stretched, and the onus falls heavily on Horta and Zalazar to create something from limited openings. Against Celtic’s defensive wall, it is difficult to see them finding much joy.
The recent stats from both sides scream low-scoring football. Braga’s last four games have produced a combined total of five goals, while five of Celtic’s last eight fixtures have ended under the 2.5 mark. Add in the nerves of a European night where neither team wants to give away an early advantage, and the conditions are primed for a cagey, tactical battle rather than a shoot-out.
