Nap of the Day: Archduke Ferdinand to Win (3.47 Haydock)
Archduke Ferdinand returns to Haydock for the 5f dash with a profile that demands a second look, especially following an eye-catching effort at Thirsk where he finished a close fourth, having been repeatedly denied a clear run when it mattered. That performance screamed of a horse in excellent nick and left the impression that a win was there for the taking under more fortunate circumstances.
Trained by Seb Spencer, who’s operating at a credible 10% strike rate over the past fortnight, Archduke Ferdinand now lines up for his second attempt over the minimum trip — a notable angle given the gelding’s previous form mostly over six and seven furlongs. Dropping to five furlongs appeared to suit well last time, as the horse travelled smoothly and showed a sharp turn of foot in the closing stages despite the trouble in running.
Rated 101 on the Racing Post scale in that Thirsk effort and holding a lifetime best of 92 in the same metric, the six-year-old grey seems to be peaking at the right time. His current mark of 84 still leaves some headroom on that evidence, and with Dale Swift again in the saddle — despite a modest recent record — continuity could pay dividends if the pair enjoy a cleaner passage. Archduke Ferdinand’s record also features strong finishing efforts at Redcar and Newmarket late last summer, and while he’s occasionally flattered to deceive, this setup looks ripe for redemption.
