Today’s Focus Races

Today’s races at York promise intense competition with a blend of seasoned veterans and rising stars. The Symphony Group Handicap, opening the day’s action, is expected to be a fast-paced affair with a crowded field. Notably, Pilgrim, who shone at Royal Ascot, will be a horse to watch, along with Holkham Bay, who recently secured an impressive victory at Ascot.

However, it’s not just these market leaders who are in contention; the likes of Kylian, now better positioned after joining a new yard this season, could also spring a surprise, especially with his strong finishing ability, which might prove advantageous in a race full of front-runners.

In the Acomb Stakes, the clash between Ruling Court and The Lion In Winter has drawn significant attention, with both horses being highly regarded as future Derby contenders. Yet, this race isn’t just about these two; the experienced Mr Chaplin, who took an unconventional path to reach this point, also brings a formidable challenge.

Meanwhile, the Great Voltigeur Stakes presents a tricky Group 2 battle, where Illinois, despite being overshadowed by his stablemate Los Angeles, has shown considerable improvement and could benefit from a stamina test. Finally, the Juddmonte International, the crown jewel of the day, sees City Of Troy headlining a field that includes seasoned contenders like Alflaila, promising a showdown of the highest calibre.

Nap of the Day

The Great Voltigeur Stakes looks set to be a tactical affair, but Illinois, at longer odds, presents a strong case as our Nap of the Day. Though his stablemate Los Angeles is the favourite, Illinois has been steadily improving and is now better suited to the conditions of this race. His ability to grind out a victory in a stamina test could come to the fore here, particularly if the race becomes a war of attrition in the final furlong. With the likelihood of a strong pace set by the outsider Euphoric, Illinois is poised to capitalise on his proven stamina and resilience, making him an appealing selection.

The Symphony Group Handicap opens the day with a fierce sprint, and Kylian, currently priced at 14/1, is our each-way selection. This horse has demonstrated a significant turn of form since joining his current yard, finishing strongly in recent outings. His ability to stay close to the pace and deliver a powerful finish could be critical in a race likely to see many front-runners burn out before the final furlong. Coming off a strong performance at Goodwood, where he overcame a troubled passage to win, Mr Chaplin has shown resilience and a turn of foot that could upset the more favoured contenders.

Despite the flashy profiles of the Godolphin and Coolmore runners, Mr Chaplin’s experience and ability to handle tricky situations make him a serious threat, especially in a race that may be more open than the market suggests.

The Juddmonte International, the day’s marquee event, features some of the best middle-distance horses in training, with City Of Troy being the standout. However, Maljoom, who has been gradually working his way back to peak form, offers an enticing alternative. This son of Caravaggio has been knocking on the door in top company, finishing strongly in his recent outings. The step up to 1m2f should suit him perfectly, and with first-time blinkers helping to sharpen his focus last time out, Maljoom is poised to deliver a career-best performance. His ability to finish powerfully could see him challenge the favourite and possibly spring an upset.
