The highlight of the day may well come in the final race at 4:45, a Class 6 one-mile handicap reserved for horses that are still searching for their first win in 2025. It’s a field packed with runners carrying questions over either form, fitness or suitability to trip, but that’s often where betting value can emerge.
Among the entries, Renesmee is expected to be popular with the public after a strong reappearance under the guidance of Michael Keady, while Darysina Gold is perhaps hoping the drop to a mile rekindles some late-2024 consistency. Monkey Miss, despite a decent strike rate on the course, has a point to prove following a disappointing seasonal return. Court Of Session is another with claims if able to build on last week’s effort when making much of the running before fading. Nap of the Day: Local Bay to win – 4:45 Brighton
Backing Local Bay this afternoon presents an appealing proposition, particularly given the recent resurgence shown at this venue. Tony Carroll’s charge arrives on the back of successive runner-up finishes at Brighton, both of which demonstrated not only renewed consistency but also an ability to battle under pressure, characteristics that are essential in low-grade handicaps.
What is notable is that both recent efforts came over similar trips and under today’s jockey, Jack Doughty, who is currently riding at a commendable 19% strike rate. The reapplication of cheekpieces, which were instrumental in past successes, is another positive. Local Bay has previously won from a 7lb higher mark, suggesting that the current rating still provides some room for manoeuvre. The most recent second-place finish, where he was beaten just over a length by Havana Mojito, is made more credible by the fact that he ran off the same rating he carries today.
From a trainer perspective, Carroll is operating at a healthy 13% strike rate over the past fortnight, and with Brighton being a venue where Local Bay has found joy before—twice a winner over course and distance—the combination of form, familiarity and tactical astuteness could well tilt things in his favour. The horse’s RPR of 83 also stands out as the highest in the field, providing statistical reinforcement to the visual impressions he’s left recently. With plenty of uncertainty surrounding his rivals, Local Bay appears primed to finally convert those near-misses into a timely success.
