One of the most intriguing runners in today’s schedule is Picturesque, a four-year-old filly trained by John & Thady Gosden, who made an encouraging debut in December. She returns to Southwell in the 1:30, aiming to build on that performance. The field includes a mix of potential improvers and more exposed types, making for an intriguing contest. With Kieran Shoemark booked for the ride, she is expected to be a major player in the race.

The most compelling betting angle for today’s action is backing Picturesque to win the 1:30 at Southwell. She showed clear ability on her debut and looks well placed to take a significant step forward in this contest.
The filly made her first racecourse appearance over this same 7f course and distance in December, finishing third despite encountering a less-than-ideal start. She was bumped leaving the stalls, which left her slightly on the back foot early on, yet she still travelled well throughout the race and kept on nicely to be involved in the finish. The front three pulled well clear of the rest of the field, highlighting the quality of the race, and she was far from fully extended by her rider. Given that was her first competitive run, natural improvement is expected, and she should be more streetwise this time around.
The Gosden team have not had a winner in the past fortnight (0-1 in the last 14 days), but their yard is well known for producing significant second-up improvement with their runners. Shoemark, who is operating at a solid 9% strike rate in the past fortnight, is a positive jockey booking, and he will know more about how to get the best out of the filly after her first run.
Among her rivals, First Ambition and Surrey Shadow are notable threats. First Ambition won a maiden at Newcastle and brings proven winning form, while Surrey Shadow has solid placed efforts but returns after a long layoff (222-day absence), which raises fitness concerns. Groovy Baby has plenty of experience but remains a ten-race maiden, making him more exposed than the progressive Picturesque.
Given her profile, Picturesque has the potential to progress significantly from her debut and should be capable of getting off the mark today. If she improves even slightly from her last run, she will be hard to beat in this field.
