Despite being hit by the absence of several core players due to British & Irish Lions selection, the touring English side produced a commanding 35-12 win in the first Test. That performance came off the back of a disciplined and dynamic display, particularly after the interval, where their backline’s clinical edge made the telling difference.
Argentina, on the other hand, showed glimpses of promise but were ultimately second best. Their subdued first-half effort put them on the back foot early, and while they struck back through tries from Pablo Matera and Pedro Rubiolo, the damage had already been done. Coach Felipe Contepomi has since responded with seven changes to his starting side, looking to reinvigorate the team’s approach and tighten up the defensive lapses that allowed England to exploit them so freely.
Elsewhere, changes in the England setup have been minimal. Only Henry Slade misses out through injury, replaced by Luke Northmore at outside centre, while coach Steve Borthwick has kept faith with the structure that functioned so well last weekend. While the Red Rose look for a clean sweep, Argentina will attempt to show their credentials at home and avoid a series whitewash.
