Alcaraz Eyes the No. 1 Ranking

After successfully defending his title at the Madrid Open, Carlos Alcaraz sets his sights on the No. 1 ranking, currently held by Novak Djokovic. The 20-year-old Spaniard is poised for his debut appearance at the Rome Masters, with an impressive 29-2 season record and having reached five finals in six tournaments in 2023.

Djokovic Stands as a Major Threat

Novak Djokovic, the second most successful player in Rome with six titles under his belt, could pose a significant challenge to Alcaraz’s hopes of securing his fifth title of the season. However, Djokovic’s fitness and elbow injury remain factors that could impact his performance. The Serbian star has been absent since his quarterfinal defeat in Banja Luka and subsequently withdrew from the Madrid Open.

Other Contenders in the Mix

Casper Ruud, a two-time Rome semifinalist in his last three visits, seeks to collect as many points as possible and improve on his recent performances. Meanwhile, Stefanos Tsitsipas, last year’s finalist and still searching for his first title in 2023, hopes for a favorable draw to seize his moment.

Dark Horses Emerge on Home Turf

Italian players are expected to excel in their home tournament, with Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti standing out as strong contenders. Despite being a risky pick due to his absence since the Barcelona tournament, Sinner remains Italy’s sole top-10 player, and with Alcaraz that looks too short and Djokovic that might be injured, looks the best bet.

On the other hand, Musetti’s dynamic playing style could captivate the home crowd and help him surpass his previous second-round performance in Rome.

Zverev Aims for Redemption

Alexander Zverev, who made a promising start in Madrid before falling to Alcaraz, aims to turn his luck around in Rome. Hindered by challenging draws, Zverev has faced top-10 players in four of his last six defeats. However, his Rome Masters record remains strong, with two final appearances and a championship title in 2017 and could be a decent alternative to Sinner.
