Kicking off the card with the Kincsem Handicap, Best Secret returns to British soil carrying top weight but justified confidence. Having run an eye-catching third at Royal Ascot in the Golden Gates Stakes, the French-trained colt looked unlucky not to finish closer. After finding trouble in running, he had to change paths more than once before storming through late.

That display suggested he had more to offer than the final placing indicated. The form of that race has since held up well, with the winner shaping as a classy type. Best Secret, who had previously impressed when dominating a Longchamp handicap by three lengths, was quickly snapped up by Wathnan Racing and now steps in again with expectations high. Trainer Stephane Wattel rarely sends runners across the Channel unless they’re ready to deliver, and this colt appears to have more improvement ahead. He’s rated at the top on adjusted figures and the trip is spot on. With a clear run, he could prove very difficult to contain.

The Richmond Stakes provides one of the standout juvenile contests of the week, and Havana Hurricane enters the fray as a proven force in this age group. A son of Havana Gold, he first made an impact by capturing the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot, where he surged through traffic to snatch a dramatic win. Since then, his reputation has only grown. Just 12 days ago at Newbury, he almost pulled off another stunning late burst in the Super Sprint, finishing a hair’s breadth from victory despite giving the winner 5lb.

That level of performance, over a trip possibly shorter than ideal, suggested a return to 6f would bring further progress. Goodwood holds no fears either, with the colt having made a winning debut here back in May, over the minimum trip, again flashing home late. The extra yardage today is expected to be ideal. He’s consistent, battle-tested, and very likely to finish strongest of all.

15:45 Goodwood – Nad Alshiba Green

The Buccellati Handicap over five furlongs has once again drawn a lively group of sprinters, and Nad Alshiba Green appears primed to peak at just the right time. Now a seasoned three-year-old, she has shown gradual improvement with each outing, most recently finishing a game second at Sandown after swooping late from off the pace.

That came after a breakthrough win at Nottingham where she delivered a powerful finishing kick, and her record in handicaps speaks volumes – never outside the first four in nine attempts. Rossa Ryan keeps the partnership intact and knows exactly how to time her surge. Drawn amongst other pace horses, she’s ideally positioned to get a slipstream into the race, which should allow her to conserve energy for one late, decisive run. With rain potentially softening the ground slightly, she won’t be inconvenienced. Having competed strongly in a similar race last season, and with her yard having won this contest in 2023, everything is set for another bold showing.

Our final selection comes in the nursery over seven furlongs, where Victorious One lines up for Ralph Beckett with a series of promising runs behind him. The Siyouni colt has knocked on the door three times already, placing second on each occasion but giving the impression that he’s learning with every run. He debuted at this venue, and that introduction over six furlongs was full of promise. On his latest start at Epsom, he was denied by only a nose in a driving finish, having travelled smoothly throughout. That came in a maiden which has already begun to work out well, and the additional furlong today looks like a positive.

With experience on undulating tracks and the benefit of having Rossa Ryan back in the saddle, there’s every reason to believe today is the day he finally gets his head in front. His profile suggests he’s still progressing and that this type of competitive handicap is the perfect stage for a breakthrough.ip keeps him sharp and travelling strongly throughout. If Soumillon gets him into a good rhythm early, he could easily outkick these rivals in the final stages.
