14:00 Leicester – This Guy

Herrin Kendrick; Horse Racing Specialist at BettingTips4You
Rationale:
In the curtain-raiser at Leicester, the betting vibes are strong for This Guy, a two-year-old who is clearly going the right way after three progressive appearances in novice company. Under the guidance of Clive Cox — a trainer operating at a highly respectable 23% strike rate over the past fortnight — this son of Blue Point has shown real progression, particularly with encouraging efforts over six furlongs at both Chepstow and Haydock. With today’s race over seven furlongs, the extra distance should be exactly what he needs, especially considering the stamina influence from his dam’s Dubawi pedigree.

The switch into handicap company looks timely, and he meets rivals who appear more exposed or less progressive. The booking of Dave Probert, who is currently riding at an exceptional 32% strike rate, only enhances the appeal. The fact he was well backed on Wednesday suggests connections are confident he’s ready to strike. A straightforward track like Leicester should suit his style of running, and if he can settle early, he looks well positioned to go one better. With speed from his sire and staying power from his dam’s side, this looks like a well-balanced type ready to shed the maiden tag.

16:05 Leicester – Bernalda

John Pentin; Sports Journalist at BettingTips4You
Rationale:
In the fillies’ 1m2f handicap later in the card, Bernalda makes strong appeal in what doesn’t appear to be a particularly deep contest. Trained by James Ferguson and ridden again by Danny Muscutt, who has partnered her several times before, this daughter of Frankel has shaped with more than enough promise in recent outings to suggest her maiden win isn’t far off. She’s been a runner-up or third on four occasions from ten runs, so she’s knocking on the door and probably finds herself now in the right company.

Her latest effort came in a similar Class 6 handicap at Wetherby, where she was denied by a nose in a tight finish. That run came off a mark of 66, and she’s only been nudged up a solitary pound since. Given she’s been rated as high as 74 previously, there’s clearly still some room to manoeuvre on her current figure. This drop in class and the consistency she’s been showing suggest she’s found the right opportunity. Patience has been the key, and this could be the afternoon where it all comes together. With ordinary opposition and a strong travelling style, Bernalda should be able to dictate her own terms.

15:22 Hamilton – Brave Emperor

Gram Dodd; Racing Analyst at BettingTips4You
Rationale:
Brave Emperor is an intriguing contender in the Almada Mile Handicap at Hamilton, not least because of his unusual global exploits. This well-travelled gelding has racked up air miles racing across continents — from Doha to Italy, and even Hong Kong. Remarkably, he has been victorious in nearly all those countries, underlining his adaptability and class. Now returning to British soil, and appearing in a handicap for the first time in over a year, the Archie Watson-trained five-year-old brings top-weight credentials into a contest that’s there for the taking.

Although conceding weight all around, he has previously won carrying heavy burdens in similar company. His last UK handicap win came in a Class 3 event, which is a stronger grade than this. With Paul Mulrennan in the saddle and forecasted to get an easy lead in a race expected to lack early tempo, Brave Emperor could control proceedings from the front. Sallaal, an unexposed type with potential, presents the main danger, but Brave Emperor’s tactical versatility and sheer battle-hardiness could be the telling difference. Given his proven record under varying conditions and against international competition, this could well be a triumphant return on more familiar ground.

16:20 Chepstow – Electric Bass

Steve Harrington; Tipster at BettingTips4You
Rationale:
In the late-afternoon handicap at Chepstow, Electric Bass appeals as a strong contender to get off the mark. His last run at Ffos Las saw him finish second, a significant improvement on his previous showing, and suggested that the penny may finally be dropping for Roger Teal’s three-year-old. What makes him particularly interesting today is the switch back to Chepstow, where the softer layout and more gradual bends could play to his developing strengths. He also gets the services of Oisin Murphy, a top-tier jockey who is unlikely to allow a tactical race to pass him by.

With limited pace expected in this field, Murphy’s tactical awareness should allow him to position Electric Bass more prominently than he was last time out under a less experienced rider. Running off just 1lb higher than at Ffos Las, and showing a good turn of foot to recover from a modest early position there, this gelding looks to be knocking on the door. His mark of 55 is certainly within reach, and the current race conditions suggest he’s capable of breaking through. If Murphy gets the fractions right, this could be a relatively straightforward opportunity to shed his maiden status.
