16:10 Newbury – Wise Approach
Herrin Kendrick; Sports journalist at BettingTips4You
Rationale:
There’s a strong sense that Wise Approach is just beginning to tap into his considerable potential. The two-year-old colt, who shaped well when winning first time out at Ascot, made further strides when fourth at York behind First Legion, before producing a significant step forward in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot. Though ultimately no match for the front-running Charles Darwin, Wise Approach stayed on powerfully in the closing stages to snatch second. That run clearly marked him out as a colt with stamina and a strong finishing kick.
The drop back to six furlongs on Friday, combined with his proven ability in Listed company, should give him an edge over a field that doesn’t appear to boast his same level of form. He currently sits nine pounds clear on Timeform’s adjusted figures, giving him a clear numerical advantage. Additionally, the combination of Charlie Appleby and William Buick, who were in blistering form at Newmarket’s July Festival, brings added confidence that he’ll be produced at his peak. While rivals such as First Legion reoppose, Wise Approach’s display at Ascot suggests he has taken his racing well and continues to improve. Conditions are expected to suit and with natural progression, he’ll be difficult to peg back.

15:25 Nottingham – Miss Hathaway
Gram Dodd; Sports journalist at BettingTips4You
Rationale:
Miss Hathaway makes her return to a Class 5 handicap with plenty in her favour. A filly who went winless as a juvenile despite several near misses, she finally broke through on her first run this season and has been largely consistent since. Most notably, she ran a cracker from a wide berth at Thirsk in a well-contested race last month, finishing a close third behind a winner who has gone on to score again. That form has been strongly boosted since, with the fourth also picking up a win, underlining the depth of that contest.
It’s also important to acknowledge that her most recent efforts can be excused. She didn’t handle Chester’s tight layout and then found herself up against a far stronger calibre of opponent in her latest start. Now dropping into easier company and running from a mark 3lb lower than her Thirsk run, she appears well-handicapped to strike again. The forecast rain is no concern either – in fact, she’s expected to thrive on softer underfoot conditions. With the formbook reading better than it might appear at a glance, this could be a return to the winner’s enclosure for a filly who’s better than her current mark suggests.
17:00 Haydock – Headmaster
John Pentin; Sports journalist at BettingTips4You
Rationale:
It’s hard to look past Headmaster in the Haydock mile novice event, as he arrives on the back of two very strong efforts against horses rated well into the 90s. On debut, the William Haggas-trained gelding ran Elarak to just under a length, and that rival has since bolted up and been given a mark of 98. Not only did Headmaster go toe-to-toe with that sort of quality, he also left Polygram – rated 77 and very well backed that day – several lengths behind. That debut performance alone suggests he’s ready to make his mark.
Stepped up to a mile and into tougher company last time at Windsor, he was only narrowly denied by Antipodes (now rated 89), and again had future winners well behind. This looks like a considerable drop in class compared to what he’s been contesting. Add in Haggas’ current 32% strike rate and the fact the son of Dubawi is out of the Group 1-winning mare One Master, and it’s clear that Headmaster is bred to progress and win. With a more straightforward track, slightly easier opposition, and further improvement expected, this looks like the perfect opportunity for him to shed his maiden tag at the third attempt.
16:00 Nottingham – Camtank
Steve Harrington; Sports journalist at BettingTips4You
Rationale:
In the 4.00 at Nottingham, Camtank looks to have a strong chance of following up her recent breakthrough victory. After a modest debut performance, she bounced back in style at Lingfield, showing smart acceleration and composure to win with something in hand. That success hinted at more to come, and with improvement seemingly on the cards, she is very much one to keep on side.
The form of that race hasn’t been tested in deeper waters yet, but the way Camtank won suggests she has scope to handle stronger competition. William Haggas has chosen a penalty-carrying route rather than pitching her straight into handicap company, which could signal that connections still see some unfinished business in novice company before the next step up. Life Is Rosie brings solid opposing form after a fine run at Windsor, but the impression is that Camtank has more natural progression ahead of her.
With A J Farragher booked and ground likely to suit, this race could fall perfectly for a filly already proving she’s learning quickly. If she runs to the same level as last time, she’s going to be difficult to beat under her 9st 9lb burden.s should allow him to position Electric Bass more prominently than he was last time out under a less experienced rider. Running off just 1lb higher than at Ffos Las, and showing a good turn of foot to recover from a modest early position there, this gelding looks to be knocking on the door. His mark of 55 is certainly within reach, and the current race conditions suggest he’s capable of breaking through. If Murphy gets the fractions right, this could be a relatively straightforward opportunity to shed his maiden status.
