Main Bet: Thirston Lawrence To Win
For the Jonsson Workwear Open, we return to the Club at Steyn City, which has been designed by Jack Nicklaus. In last week’s course, the greens were molded as linksland greens should be, but this week we are heading back to a more traditional Nicklaus golf course, with greens raised and fairways protected by lakes and modern bunkering. The field is also moved from the Eastern Cape seaside to the resort of Steyn City, which is in between Pretoria and Johannesburg, where thin air and extra distance will surely be things to consider carefully.
Our main pick for this week is Thirston Lawrence, who has done well at altitude in the past, especially when winning the European Masters. The 28-year-old also won the Joburg Open around 18 months ago when the event was reduced to 36 holes, and clearly he does like thin air. Other clear evidence of this is his second place in the Kenya Open and his ninth and eighth on the High Veldt when the circuit made it back to his home country. Let’s not forget a 36th at Eichenried in Munich and also an eight place at Albatross in Czechia; both are not as high as Johannesburg or Nairobi but are still in an elevated position. The aforementioned win at Crans in the European Masters was clearly at altitude.
Despite missing the cut in Madrid, he ended up 33rd at Houghton and also won the South African Open at Blair Atholl. He is coming here in good form, as he finished 14th last week at St. Francis Links and seems to be at home on Nicklaus courses. He also finished third at Serengeti in the 2020 Southern African Tour Championship, so surely there are lots of positives about him, and at this price, he is surely worth a shot this week.
