Main Bet: Jason Day To Win
The first pick is JASON DAY, whose comeback was furthered by a special trip to El Camaleon. Day finished the tournament in a share of 21st place, which was both satisfying and frustrating. Despite starting the tournament in 115th place after a poor early rounds, Day quickly regained the form he’s displayed since the beginning of October with rounds of 64, 67, and 66.
However, the wider picture is that he is obviously in good health, preparing to make his sixth start of the year after once packing the clubs away for a very long period, and his performances have genuine substance. Day will likely continue to rise in the rankings, if not all the way up to where he once was because of the levels of approach play he’s displayed since July. Day wasn’t always the most dependable iron player, even at his best, but his relatively new swing is delivering in that area, giving him a ranking of 14th so early in the season.
He corrected his bad Fortinet Championship performance off the tee by placing sixth in the Shriners, and he followed that up by placing 11th behind McIlroy and co in the prestigious CJ Cup. His performance last week on a less than ideal track in Mexico does not dissuade me; this is far more on par with his best golf since his last victory in 2019.
Day was down the field at Memorial Park last year when he wasn’t in great shape, but he had already demonstrated how well the course worked for him. The Australian was in contention the entire week in 2020 when the PGA Tour made its debut here; at the time, his form prior to the tournament read MC-64-38-WD-60 after a string of top-10 finishes at the tail end of the summer.
He did finish in the top 10 in this tournament for the second time on the PGA Tour, and his first victory was in Dallas, so there’s a good chance he’ll be back in contention on Sunday.
