The Great Voltigeur has historically revealed much about autumn campaigns. With Lambourn carrying a Group 1 penalty and this being his first run in nearly two months, there is scope for one of his rivals to close the gap.

After a maiden success at Ballinrobe, he stepped straight into Listed company at Navan, where he won with authority over a mile and five furlongs. His most telling performance, however, came at Royal Ascot in the Queen’s Vase, a race which has proven a hotbed of form. Four winners have since emerged from that contest, including Scandinavia, who went on to land a Group 1. Carmers beat Furthur into second that day, and that rival has since underlined the strength of the form by winning the Geoffrey Freer.
The challenge here is different, with the test dropping back to a mile and a half. Yet this could play to Carmers’ advantage. His ability to travel smoothly and quicken at the end of a staying contest suggests he has the pace required for this shorter trip. Lambourn is unquestionably a high-class opponent, but his penalty and light preparation create an opportunity. Pride Of Arras, though dangerous back at York, must prove he has rediscovered his Dante form. Arabian Force is improving but has more to find.
With Paddy Twomey’s colt arriving fresh after a mid-summer break, boasting unblemished form, and having proven himself against solid rivals, Carmers is the most compelling option to cause an upset in this storied trial.
