Flying Childers Stakes Preview, Predictions And Best Bets

Is Magnum Force Destined to Lead the Field at Doncaster?
  • Magnum Force’s near-miss at York was down to an unlucky draw, yet he finished strongly despite the disadvantage.
  • Tropical Storm’s recent win at York came by only a narrow margin, benefiting from an expertly judged ride by Oisin Murphy.
  • Big Mojo returns to five furlongs, the distance that saw him secure his Group 3 victory at Goodwood earlier this season.

Jan Brueghel to Win @ 4/1
Reasoning
Jan Brueghel offers value in the St Leger with untapped potential and stamina, benefiting from a strong pace. Illinois is the favourite, but Jan Brueghel’s upward trajectory is compelling.

The Flying Childers Stakes, a prestigious Group 2 race, is a thrilling test of speed and stamina for two-year-olds, set to unfold at Doncaster’s St Leger Festival. As always, this five-furlong sprint will challenge young horses to prove their mettle in one of the season’s most competitive events. With no shortage of talent on display, the stakes are high, and the contest promises to be fiercely contested by several promising juveniles.

Magnum Force, trained by Ger Lyons and partnered with Colin Keane, comes into this race as the clear favourite. His performance in a recent listed race at York caught the attention of many when, despite a challenging draw, he was arguably unlucky not to come away with the win. His ability to travel effortlessly, even when forced to adjust his position mid-race, indicates that he possesses both the tactical speed and maturity required to excel in this fast-paced event. Magnum Force’s smooth running style and the skill of his rider in navigating through the field suggest that he will be a formidable contender.

However, there are other capable horses in the field who will make this anything but a straightforward affair. Big Mojo, under the guidance of Silvestre De Sousa for Michael Appleby, has shown flashes of brilliance, particularly with his surprising win at Goodwood. Despite a subpar run in the Gimcrack Stakes over six furlongs, Big Mojo’s return to a shorter distance could see him bounce back with a strong showing. His natural early speed could well see him vying for the lead early on.

Tropical Storm, trained by Andrew Balding and ridden by Oisin Murphy, also presents a major threat. His narrow victory over Magnum Force at York, where he dictated the pace superbly, demonstrated his ability to thrive in a tactical race. Although it can be argued that Tropical Storm benefited from the perfect ride last time, his overall form suggests that he has the potential to be in the mix once again, particularly if the race unfolds in a similar manner.

Further down the market, Aesterius and Coto De Caza are also worth noting. The former, trained by Archie Watson, has steadily risen through the ranks, with his recent Group 3 success at Longchamp solidifying his credentials at this level. Meanwhile, Coto De Caza, trained by the Crisfords, is on an upward trajectory with two wins to her name, and she will be looking to upset some of the more fancied runners with her proven speed and recent consistency.

Best Bet for the Flying Childers Stakes: Magnum Force

After carefully considering the field, Magnum Force emerges as the horse most likely to claim victory. His unfortunate defeat at York, where he was beaten by Tropical Storm after a difficult draw, is unlikely to be repeated if he gets a clearer run here. The race at York showcased his cruising speed and the professionalism with which he approached the challenge.

Given a more favourable set-up, Colin Keane should be able to position him better, making use of his ability to finish strongly. The step back in trip should play perfectly into Magnum Force’s hands, and he is clearly a horse with the scope to improve further. Expect him to track the pace before unleashing his sprint late on to secure the win.
