Silver Wraith has been knocking on the door in competitive company and looks poised to make her mark in this six-furlong handicap at Epsom. She shaped very nicely on her handicap debut at Goodwood in June, chasing home a rival who looked above average, and that run provided the clearest signal yet that she has the ability to win at this level. Since then, she has contested stronger races than today’s, most recently finishing a creditable fourth at Sandown after a sluggish break left her with ground to make up.

Epsom’s track can catch some out, but Silver Wraith’s balance and determination look tailor-made for handling its twists and turns. Everything points towards a well-deserved breakthrough, and in this company she is unlikely to find many better chances to get her head in front.

Shaboozee arrives in cracking form and looks a horse very much on the upgrade. His run at Killarney two starts ago showed real promise when he finished second despite losing his rider’s irons early on. That effort highlighted both his talent and his tenacity, as he still managed to travel strongly and stick on despite the mishap. Building on that, he returned to Ballinrobe earlier this month and stamped his authority with a commanding performance, making all the running and pulling clear in the straight.
That victory came with plenty in hand, suggesting the assessor has been lenient with only a 7lb rise in the weights. Trained by Joseph O’Brien, who excels with progressive types, Shaboozee has the hallmarks of a horse capable of climbing higher through the handicap ranks. His ability to dictate matters up front, combined with a proven liking for the track, makes him a very difficult rival to peg back. Given his trajectory and the quality of his recent form, another big effort looks inevitable.
