Ligue 1’s Changing Winds: PSG’s Dominance, Marseille’s Rise, and the Dark Horses

Key Stats
– PSG have won only six of the last eight French league titles.
– Marseille, under Marcelino, have made three high-profile signings from English football.
– Rennes, after finishing fourth last season, have strengthened its lineup with signings worth a combined £30 million.

The city of Paris, known for its art, culture, and now football, has been in the limelight for quite a while. Paris Saint Germain (PSG), or the Parisians, as they’re affectionately known, have been the defining force in French football. But are the tides changing?

PSG: The Reigning Giants

Over the years, PSG have been known for its extravagant signings. Their recent acquisitions, including the likes of Manuel Ugarte from Sporting, Lucas Hernandez from Milan, and the anticipated signing of Benfica’s Goncalo Ramos, show their intent to continue their dominance.

They’ve also beefed up their defence with Hernandez and Milan Skriniar, aiming for a more fortified back four under the guidance of new manager Luis Enrique. Enrique is known for his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation. In this setup, Manuel Ugarte is likely to play a pivotal role in protecting the back four. Moreover, with the recent signing of Portugal international striker Goncalo Ramos, PSG are poised to attack with renewed vigour.

However, despite their overwhelming presence, PSG have claimed “only” six of the last eight Ligue 1 titles. The memories of 2016-17 are still fresh when Monaco, with the likes of a teenage Kylian Mbappe, Bernardo Silva, and others, snatched the title away. Not too long ago, in 2020-21, Lille also managed to defy the odds.

Currently, PSG stand at 1/5 to win the title. Translated, this implies a 75% probability. Given their strong lineup, even with the uncertainty surrounding Mbappe’s future and Messi’s departure, it’s tough to bet against them.

Marseille: The Challengers

Marseille have emerged as a serious contender. They’re not just favourites for a top-four finish, but potentially winning the title, if not for PSG’s dominance. The 11-point gap with last season’s runners-up, Lens, is deceptive. The departure of key players from Lens like Lois Openda and Seko Fofana leaves them vulnerable. Lille and Monaco, despite their historical prominence, have to recover from finishing fifth and sixth, respectively, last season.

Marseille’s trajectory is promising. After a slump towards the end of last season, they have reinvigorated themselves with the appointment of experienced Spanish manager Marcelino. Alongside him, new signings including Iliman Ndiaye, Ismaila Sarr, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from English football bring fresh energy and talent. Ruslan Malinovskyi, particularly, is expected to be an influential creative force.

Dark Horses: Rennes and Strasbourg

While PSG and Marseille take much of the spotlight, teams like Rennes and Strasbourg hint at surprising turns this season. Strasbourg, under the consortium that owns Chelsea, have been splurging in the transfer market, hinting at a stronger performance than their 15th place finish last season.

Rennes, finishing fourth last season, looks even more formidable now with the signing of Ludovic Blas and Enzo Le Fee. They bring technical finesse which, combined with Martin Terrier’s eventual return from injury and the brilliance of players like Jeremy Doku, Amine Gouiri, and Arnaud Kalimuendo, makes Rennes an explosive side.

Predictions for the Season

1. The Title Winner: PSG’s Fortified Foundations

While the previous seasons have seen a couple of anomalies, this year, PSG seem to be on a warpath to ensure that the title remains in Paris. Here’s why:

  • Defensive Strength: PSG’s recent acquisitions of Lucas Hernandez and Milan Skriniar aren’t just ordinary signings. These are clear indications of a strategic move to bolster their defence. With the duo having established reputations in Europe, opposing teams will find it challenging to find gaps.
  • Luis Enrique’s Vision: The appointment of Luis Enrique as the helmsman could be one of the most crucial factors. With a history of developing cohesive units that excel both defensively and offensively, Enrique brings a refined tactical approach. His preference for the 4-2-3-1 formation offers balance, which PSG can exploit given their squad depth.
  • Unrelenting Attack: Even with the uncertainty of Mbappe’s future and Messi’s departure, PSG haven’t lost their bite. The incoming Goncalo Ramos from Benfica and potential future signings such as Ousmane Dembele and Randal Kolo Muani indicate a forward line that could be as intimidating, if not more, than last season.
  • Market Confidence: The odds seem to heavily favour PSG. Their current standing at 1/5 for the title, implying a 75% probability, isn’t just based on historical performance but a reflection of their current squad strength and potential.

2. Top 4 Finish: Marseille’s Impending Surge

Marseille have always been one of Ligue 1’s elite clubs, but recent transformations suggest that they’re not just in the race for the top 4 but might also give PSG a run for their money:

  • Marcelino’s Mastery: Bringing in Marcelino was a masterstroke. His tenure in Spanish football has been marked by turning around teams, getting the best out of players, and employing tactics that often outwit bigger opponents. With Marseille’s resources at his disposal, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them become a cohesive and formidable unit in no time.
  • Strategic Signings: The transfer window has been busy for Marseille. The arrival of players like Iliman Ndiaye, Ismaila Sarr, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from the competitive English football circuit ensures fresh energy and proven talent. Ruslan Malinovskyi, in particular, could be the creative spark, the linchpin, around whom the team could pivot.
  • Closing the Gap: Last season’s 11-point difference with the second-placed Lens might seem vast, but it’s essential to note the transformative phase the team has undergone. With Lens losing key players and other teams like Lille and Monaco yet to hit their stride, Marseille seems poised to capitalise.
  • A Revitalized Squad: While the new signings bring in talent, the existing squad members, rejuvenated under Marcelino’s leadership, could play pivotal roles. Their blend of experience and youth might just be the right mix needed for a top-tier finish.
