⚽ Football Bet of the Day
New York City FC vs Toronto
Steve Harrington; Sports journalist at BettingTips4You
Both Teams to Score | |
7/10 - odds when tipped | |
Reasoning Both New York City FC and Toronto are erratic but regularly find the net — and concede — in equal measure. NYCFC’s home record masks frequent defensive lapses, while Toronto are sharper on the road than at home. With attacking talent on show and defensive doubts, BTTS offers standout value here. |
🧮 Quickfire Stats
- NYCFC have conceded first in 5 home games this season
- Toronto are unbeaten in their last 3 away league games
- Three of Toronto’s four MLS wins this year came when leading at half-time
Rationale:
Thursday’s clash at Yankee Stadium brings together two erratic but dangerous Eastern Conference sides, with New York City FC hosting Toronto FC in a match that could go either way. After studying the trends, personnel, and form guides, I’m convinced the value lies in BTTS – Yes (Both Teams to Score).
NYCFC are a puzzling case this season. At home, they’re capable of dismantling sides — as Atlanta United found out in a 4-0 thrashing not long ago. Yet following every win, they’ve consistently fallen flat, often failing to score. That inconsistency defines them, but what’s remained constant is their vulnerability at the back. They’ve now conceded first in five of their MLS matches played at Yankee Stadium this season, including in matches they eventually turned around.
While Matt Freese is out and Alonso Martinez might return after international duty, that won’t necessarily fix their defensive lapses. Even at their fortress in the Bronx, they’ve had to dig themselves out of holes — and this trend might repeat again on Thursday.
Toronto, on the other hand, are no one’s idea of dependable, but they’ve shown resilience on the road. Robin Fraser’s side are unbeaten in three straight away league matches, conceding no more than a single goal in each, and the clean sheet they kept against Portland — despite missing key figures like Bernardeschi and Laryea — suggests their rearguard might be more reliable than usual.
Yet it’s their attacking verve that earns them a nod here. Tyrese Spicer, Alonso Coello and Bryce Brynhildsen have all stepped up in recent weeks, giving TFC pace, pressing and confidence in the final third. In fact, three of Toronto’s four wins in 2025 have come when they’ve led at the break, and they seem to spring into life when they’re not playing in front of their own fans.
Add to this the fact that NYCFC have won five straight games against Toronto — meaning the visitors have a psychological hurdle to clear — and we’ve got the ingredients for a tense, open contest where both sides can find the net.
Neither team has the cohesion or consistency to keep a clean sheet — but both have weapons capable of punishing mistakes. With the pressure building and playoff hopes dangling in the balance, a tight, but entertaining draw or narrow win for either side feels likely. Expect both nets to bulge.
