Rationale
The Theatre of Dreams has recently turned into a playground for visiting teams, and today’s visitors could exploit that vulnerability even further. Manchester United’s defence has not recorded a clean sheet at home since before Christmas, and the likelihood of changing that against Guardiola’s side appears slim to none.
Pep’s men looked back in tune during their 2-0 midweek win over Leicester. Jack Grealish finally got on the scoresheet, and Marmoush – one of the more underrated winter additions – continued his impressive streak with a fifth league goal. Their movement, variety in attack, and pressing from the front are exactly the kind of threats that United have consistently failed to handle this season.
Defensively, the Red Devils are being held together by makeshift solutions. Injuries to Lisandro Martinez, Jonny Evans and the uncertainty surrounding Matthijs de Ligt’s availability leave Amorim with few options. Maguire, Yoro and Mazraoui will be under constant pressure, particularly with Doku and Savinho stretching the play.
City have been far from perfect on the road this campaign – with only three wins from their last 11 Premier League away fixtures – but their performance levels remain significantly higher than their cross-town rivals. United have lost 13 times already in the league and were just beaten by a Forest side who dominated them in large periods.
With Kevin De Bruyne likely to make his final derby appearance and Erling Haaland sidelined, the onus falls on City’s midfield and wide players to step up – and with form returning to the side, the gap in quality is undeniable.
