30/1 - odds when tipped | |
Reasoning This four-fold focuses on home advantage, squad depth, and matchups: West Brom to beat an injury-hit Derby, Watford to edge Norwich at Vicarage Road, Wigan to overpower Notts County with goals, and Stoke to progress without conceding against Walsall. All picks are based on tactical and form advantages.

West Bromwich Albion vs Derby County
Expert: Steve Harrington; Sports journalist at BettingTips4You
Rationale:
West Bromwich Albion enter this EFL Cup tie with momentum after a gritty 1-0 league win over Blackburn, while Derby County arrive under pressure following a 3-1 defeat to Stoke. Ryan Mason is expected to rotate heavily, but the potential inclusion of Josh Maja and Devante Cole in attack provides a more direct, aggressive threat.
The Baggies have a poor recent record against Derby, losing four consecutive meetings, but Derby’s lengthy injury list and likely changes mean they will struggle to maintain that dominance. John Eustace’s side have prioritised the Championship, and this fixture could see fringe players exposed by West Brom’s depth.
With home advantage and a fresher, more confident squad, West Brom can control the midfield battle and limit Derby’s attacking opportunities. If they convert early chances, they could force the Rams to open up, creating even more space to exploit.

Watford vs Norwich City
Expert: John Pentin; Sports journalist at BettingTips4You
Rationale:
Watford and Norwich both lost their Championship openers, but Norwich’s defensive vulnerabilities away from Carrow Road remain a concern. The Canaries conceded twice against Millwall despite controlling possession for large spells.
Watford’s late defeat to Charlton masked some encouraging attacking play, with Nestory Irankunda showing flashes of quality on debut. Paulo Pezzolano’s side are capable of unsettling Norwich’s back three by stretching the pitch and playing direct into the forwards.
While Norwich have won the last three meetings between these clubs, Liam Manning is still bedding in 11 summer signings, and rotation could harm cohesion. Watford, with home support behind them and fewer changes expected, can capitalise on Norwich’s early-season adjustments. The Hornets’ pace on the wings and physicality in central areas give them the tools to break through and keep their own defensive shape intact.
Best Bet – Watford Draw No Bet
Wigan Athletic vs Notts County
Expert: Herrin Kendrick; Sports journalist at BettingTips4You
Rationale:
Wigan’s EFL Cup record is dire, with six first-round exits in the past seven years, yet this tie offers a genuine chance to change that narrative. Notts County are struggling for results and have a depleted squad, with six players sidelined through injury.
Ryan Lowe’s side showed attacking intent in their 3-1 win over Northampton, and although they stumbled at Leyton Orient, the Latics still created chances. Mullin and Costelloe should enjoy space against a County backline that has shipped goals regularly since April.
Notts County’s inability to keep clean sheets, combined with their poor form, suggests they will have to take risks to progress. This should leave them exposed to Wigan’s transitional play. With home advantage and more experience at this level, Wigan are well-placed to dictate tempo and secure progression.
Best Bet – Wigan Athletic to Win & Over 2.5 Goals
Stoke City vs Walsall
Expert: Tyler Morris; Sports journalist at BettingTips4You
Rationale:
Stoke City’s confident 3-1 win over Derby in their league opener showed the positive impact of Mark Robins’ arrival. The Potters have strengthened with key signings, and even with rotation, their squad depth far outweighs Walsall’s.
The visitors will approach this with belief after last season’s League Two playoff run, but their narrow loss to Gillingham at the weekend underlined the challenges of facing higher-tier opposition. While Walsall are competitive and well-drilled, the gulf in physicality and technical ability is hard to ignore.
Stoke’s attacking options, including loan forward Divin Mubama and the creative Jun-Ho, should be able to pull Walsall’s defensive lines apart. Early pressure could force the Saddlers into mistakes, and once Stoke establish control, they have the players to add to their tally. This looks like a fixture where the Championship side’s quality will tell.
Best Bet – Stoke City to Win to Nil
