Main Bet: Hurly Long
Alexander Bjork, Laurie Canter, Mike Lorenzo Vera, Dean Burmester (twice), Adrian Otaegui, and Dylan Frittelli all finished in the top ten during the previous five years. The pick from last year’s column, Nicolai Hojgaard, came in at 71.0, and there is no reason to depart from that strategy given that the Portugal Masters at Dom Pedro has proven to be a reliable indicator for this week.
We saw that the first winner at Earth was Lee Westwood, who had already won in Portugal. Robert Karlsson, who finished second in Portugal a few weeks prior, followed him. Alvaro Quiros, the third winner, was a previous Dom Pedro champion. Andy Sullivan won in Portugal in 2015 and finished second in Dubai the following year. Tom Lewis, the 2015 Portugal winner, finished tied for seventh place the following year and sixth the following year. Laurie Canter finished second in Portugal in 2020 before sharing the lead after 54 holes on the Earth Course and then coming in fifth.
In addition to this Portugal pointer, there is the manner in which these outsiders will attack. The PGA Tour recently paid El Camaleon its usual visit; it is a Greg Norman design that often rewards accurate rather than powerful tee shots. With a length of over 7,700 yards, Norman’s Earth Course at Jumeirah is somewhat of a contrast to that.
While Matt Fitzpatrick’s two victories demonstrate that huge hitting is not necessary, his consistently high rankings for strokes gained off the tee, like those of Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm, who have both recently won this tournament twice, speak to the general quality of his performance off the tee (and who do pound it). Burmester, who placed second twice, Canter, and Hojgaard all rank well in the category and in the Driving Distance standings. The German Hurly Long would be my first choice this week. He finished ninth in the Mallorca Open after spending the entire week in the top 12, giving him his sixth and seventh top-10 finishes of the year. He spent the entire week in the top 10 at Dom Pedro, carding 65-67-66-67 for a share of fifth.
This year’s Middle East record for him? At Al Hamra, he finished with 64s both weeks to finish 18th and third. His best work places him 36th for SG Off the Tee and 33rd for Distance. He looks like a great bet for this week and it is our first choice.
