1. Doncaster Rovers vs Exeter City

John Pentin; Sports journalist at BettingTips4You
Rationale:
Doncaster return to League One full of belief after an exhilarating promotion campaign that saw them net 19 goals across six pre-season games. Grant McCann’s side clearly favour an attacking approach, and the trio of Molyneux, Sharp and Gibson all carry a threat in the final third.

On the other side, Exeter may have struggled last season, but their summer preparation has been solid. They’ve scored in three of four friendlies and have dangerous outlets like Sonny Cox, who leads their line and remains a key figure.

With Doncaster’s goal-hungry form and Exeter’s transitional defence, it’s hard to imagine either side keeping a clean sheet. Both teams are likely to play with intent on day one.

2. Lincoln City vs Reading

Wolfgang Shotten; Sports journalist at BettingTips4You
Rationale:
This fixture sees two sides who just missed the play-offs last term go head-to-head. Lincoln, who recently put four past West Brom in a friendly, have been sharp in pre-season and will fancy their chances at home. James Collins provides a seasoned touch up front, and Hackett adds creativity in behind.

Reading, however, have attacking potential of their own. Despite a shaky summer showing, Harvey Knibbs remains a potent finisher, having netted 16 times last season. The Royals are undergoing transition, but still possess quality in midfield and forward areas, including Lewis Wing and Kyerewaa, both of whom love to get forward.

Given both teams’ open approach and an eagerness to begin positively, we’re expecting goals from both sides at Sincil Bank.

3. Huddersfield Town vs Leyton Orient

Gram Dodd; Sports journalist at BettingTips4You
Rationale:
This opening day clash pairs two promotion hopefuls, both of whom are in rebuild mode. Huddersfield may be under new management, but with players like Alfie May—who has bagged over 80 League One goals in four years—they will be expected to attack from the outset.

However, Leyton Orient are no pushovers. After narrowly missing out on promotion at Wembley last term, they’ve added Demetri Mitchell and Josh Koroma, both of whom can cause problems on the break. Their back four has changed significantly, and with little time to settle, it’s unlikely they’ll hold firm against a side like Huddersfield.

Still, Orient’s recent 3-1 win in pre-season against Waltham Abbey and attacking tweaks suggest they can exploit space too. A fast-paced, open match seems likely at the John Smith’s Stadium.

4. Blackpool vs Stevenage

Herrin Kendrick; Sports journalist at BettingTips4You
Rationale:
Blackpool have strengthened across the park this summer, and pre-season results back that up. An unbeaten run featuring wins over AFC Fylde and West Brom has given Steve Bruce’s side the momentum they need to push for the play-offs. With Ennis and Fletcher up top, goals should not be an issue.

Stevenage, despite finishing 14th last term, have quietly improved during the off-season, bringing in Phoenix Patterson, Chem Campbell and others. In Jamie Reid, they possess a forward capable of converting limited chances.

While Blackpool are likely to control possession, their injuries in defence—particularly to Imray and Husband—could leave gaps for Stevenage to exploit. This is a well-matched contest for opening day, and both sides have the attacking tools to make their mark.

5. Wigan Athletic vs Northampton Town

Steve Harrington; Sports journalist at BettingTips4You
Rationale:
Wigan will be desperate to climb the table this season, and they’ve shown intent by bringing in Paul Mullin, a proven goal machine at lower-league level. Alongside Costelloe, they form a direct and pacey front two, and that could spell trouble for Northampton’s back line.

The Cobblers, though, are not short of experience either. Sam Hoskins, their talisman, is fit again and always capable of turning tight games. They’ve had mixed pre-season results, but ended positively with a 3-0 win against a Birmingham XI.

Wigan may boast defensive solidity, but they did ship a few goals during pre-season. Meanwhile, Northampton tend to find the net against sides who try to play expansive football. It wouldn’t be surprising to see a tight game where both sides get on the scoresheet.
