The fact that the Paris Masters has normally being the last ATP Tour tournament of the regular season has led to a lot of big names dropping out. Not this time. Only the injured Alex Zverev is absent from the current elite, and since there is only one week between the conclusion of this tournament and the start of the ATP Finals (which hasn’t always been the case), there is no need for the top players to hold anything back.

There are still two spots left in the upcoming ATP Finals, which will feature the best eight players of the season. The two players who could still force their way onto the Turin field, Taylor Fritz and Hubert Hurkacz, are separated from Felix Auger-Aliassime and Andrey Rublev by a wide margin. The first side of the draw includes all four competitors, along with DANIIL MEDVEDEV and Carlos Alcaraz, the current world number 1.

Alcaraz, who was humiliated by Auger-Aliassime in Basel on Saturday, hasn’t fired since winning the US Open, which is perhaps understandable. I’m definitely against him. Hurkacz won’t likely make the necessary run, in my opinion. Hurkacz hasn’t made it past the semifinals in a number of indoor tournaments that weren’t as good as this one.

Fritz may have a better chance, but his 4-3 record in Paris isn’t terrific, despite the fact that it’s better than Rublev’s 1-4; it’s typically too fast for him here. Medvedev is the one I want to back this week. I haven’t seen him play tennis as well as he did in Vienna in a while, but it would be wrong to overlook his semi-final match against Novak Djokovic in Astana, which was only cut short by an injury before the final set.

With Medvedev advancing to the final without losing a set in Austria, it was clear from his performances that this issue was finally behind him. Russians prefer rapid conditions, which Paris’ Greenset courts have offered lately. He won here in 2020, and in the final the previous year, only Djokovic proved to be a match for him.

Medvedev’s season as a whole hasn’t been very good, so he will probably feel good about being banned from Wimbledon. In other words, he feels as though he has something to show heading into both this tournament and the ATP Finals, so I anticipate a strong performance from him in November. He may, of course, find Djokovic to be too strong once more in this match, but I couldn’t discourage anyone from backing the Serb, who has missed even larger portions of the season and will also feel he has a point to make.

Djokovic should have more left in the tank than almost anyone in this field because he missed the full North American summer tour.
This has definitely seemed to be the case in the tournaments he has played since the US Open. The Wimbledon champion recently won in Tel Aviv and Astana. He has won the trophy in Paris six times before, most recently last year. He has been given a draw that appears favorable; it is in the bottom half, where all of the top seeds are vulnerable. Even considering that, Medvedev represents much better value and it is our pick for this week.
