After half a decade at the helm, Mikel Arteta has managed to construct a façade of ambition without any genuine reward. Yes, the Spaniard talks a good game — all about evolution, squad building, tactical refinement. But football’s currency isn’t concepts; it’s trophies. And once again, Arsenal are empty-handed.
Arsenal’s Cycle of Excuses: The Myth of Progress Under Arteta
One might argue that consistency matters — three consecutive runners-up finishes in the Premier League suggest a team on the brink. Yet when one digs deeper, what emerges is a team repeatedly bottling it when it matters most. With nearly £650 million spent under Arteta’s stewardship — including eye-watering sums on Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, and Ben White — supporters deserve more than pretty patterns and poetic press conferences. They crave something tangible. And they’re not getting it.

Smoke and Mirrors: An Empty Trophy Cabinet with a Premium Price Tag
Strip away the hollow Community Shield wins and one’s left with just a single meaningful triumph — the 2020 FA Cup, secured with a squad largely built by Unai Emery. The optimism that once surrounded Arteta has withered, replaced by a creeping sense of déjà vu. For all the slick football and high possession stats, Arsenal remain the nearly-men of English football.
Even the summer of 2025 hasn’t inspired confidence. Yes, Martin Zubimendi arrived for £55.8m to replace the outgoing Thomas Partey. And yes, Christian Norgaard came in from Brentford for £10m. But the transfer strategy continues to feel reactive rather than visionary. Kepa Arrizabalaga’s £5m move from Chelsea is hardly the statement of a title-chasing side. The grand pursuit of Viktor Gyokeres, while promising on paper, remains unresolved — symptomatic of Arsenal’s inability to act decisively.
Our Best Bet
Arsenal NOT to Win a Major Trophy in 2025/26 Season | |
8/11 - odds when tipped | |
Reasoning Arteta’s track record is now undeniable: five years, £650m+ spent, and still no Premier League or Champions League success. Despite squad tweaks and promising additions like Zubimendi, structural issues remain unresolved. A horror fixture list, combined with Arteta’s poor record under pressure, makes this bet look more secure than ever. |
Fixture Chaos and a Manager Who Cracks Under Pressure
The opening weeks of the 2025/26 season expose Arteta to fire from the off. A brutal run awaits: Manchester United at Old Trafford, followed by trips to Liverpool and Newcastle, with home clashes against Manchester City and Nottingham Forest in quick succession. In past seasons, Arteta’s Arsenal have wilted under similar pressure. There’s little evidence to suggest this year will be any different.
One might expect a tactically astute manager to learn from repeated failings. Yet Arteta persists with his rigid structures, often prioritising control over cutting edge. His reluctance to adapt in big games — most recently highlighted in the Champions League semi-final exit to PSG — is what separates him from genuine elite managers.
While Arne Slot steered Liverpool to the title in his debut campaign, Arteta watched helplessly as his squad collapsed once more in the final stretch. The fact that Spurs, of all clubs, managed to break their own long-standing trophy drought last season should sting even more.
A Transfer Window That Feels Cosmetic, Not Transformative
On the face of it, Arsenal’s summer business appears logical. Zubimendi and Norgaard are solid if unspectacular solutions to the midfield departures of Jorginho and Partey. But neither signing is transformative. Arsenal have spent £70.8m this summer — bringing their net outlay to minus £66.6m — but none of it has fundamentally shifted the needle. They still lack a world-class striker. The need for someone like Viktor Gyokeres is urgent, yet nothing has been finalised.
Meanwhile, squad depth remains questionable. Injuries have already ruled out Gabriel Magalhaes, Gabriel Jesus and Reiss Nelson during pre-season. Promoting 15-year-old Max Dowman, as talented as he may be, signals a lack of real depth — not strategic brilliance.

The Illusion of Squad Harmony and the Weight of Empty Promises
Arteta insists the dressing room is in a good place. But how often have we heard about “great vibes” and “strong culture” only to see the team implode when it matters? The departure list this summer includes Kieran Tierney, Partey, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Jorginho — none replaced like-for-like in terms of leadership or experience.
Kepa’s arrival won’t dramatically elevate the team between the sticks, and while Zubimendi might bring tidy passing, he doesn’t offer the steel of his predecessor. Norgaard, too, feels like a patch-up signing rather than a carefully scouted gem.
Our Take
Let’s be brutally honest — Arteta has run out of excuses. He’s been given time, money, support, and influence. The board have gone all-in on his vision. And yet, five years in, we’re still talking about “next season.”
The fixture list isn’t doing him any favours, but the truth is, he’s shown no capacity to turn adversity into opportunity. When Manchester City collapsed last season, it was Liverpool — not Arsenal — who capitalised. That says everything.
Tactically, Arteta continues to overthink, often outmanoeuvred by more instinctive managers. His overreliance on structured build-up and positional rotations works brilliantly against mid-table opposition. But when the stakes rise, and the press intensifies, Arsenal crumble. Last season’s defeats in key moments — not least against Liverpool and PSG — demonstrated that painfully clearly.
Arne Slot arrived at Anfield and immediately delivered the title. That should’ve been Arteta. Instead, Arsenal finished second for the third time in a row. This isn’t a process. It’s paralysis dressed in philosophy.
The squad might look deeper, but it isn’t demonstrably better. There’s still no clear plan for breaking down low blocks, no consistent threat in front of goal, and glaring gaps in mentality. Arsenal are mentally brittle — they always have been under Arteta.
And let’s not forget — this team, this system, this whole project — was built specifically to topple Manchester City. But the Citizens didn’t even challenge last year, and Arsenal still couldn’t get it done. That failure lies at the manager’s feet. Not the players. Not the injuries. The manager.
