Fontwell Park Racecourse is unlike any other in the UK, as it remains the only track to feature a figure of eight steeplechase course. The story of Fontwell begins with Alfred Day, a racehorse trainer who revived the historic name “Fontwell” after discovering it in records dating back to 1630. By 1924, Day had acquired enough land to build a racecourse. On 21 May that year, the first official meeting took place, with Gem winning the opening contest under Fred Rees.
Royal history is also woven into Fontwell’s legacy. In 1949, Monaveen provided Princess Elizabeth and the Queen Mother with their first winner as owners. Since then, the course has staged many notable moments, including John Francome breaking the all-time National Hunt winners’ record here in 1984.
Feature Races and Notable Winners
The National Spirit Hurdle, run each February, is Fontwell’s standout event. A recognised trial for the Cheltenham Festival, it has been won by horses of real calibre such as My Way de Solzen, Lough Derg and Celestial Halo. The Southern National, staged in November, offers a stamina-sapping three miles and three and a half furlongs chase, providing punters with another highlight on the calendar.
Historical stars such as National Spirit, a dual Champion Hurdle winner who secured multiple victories at Fontwell in the 1940s, underline the track’s importance in shaping racing stories. More recently, loyal campaigners like St Athans Lad have shown how certain horses thrive repeatedly around this figure of eight layout.
