World Cup 2026 opens in Mexico City
The 2026 finals burst into life under the lights of the Estadio Banorte, where co-hosts Mexico fling open the doors to a roaring home crowd for the tournament’s curtain-raiser against South Africa on Thursday. It is a stage El Tri know how to command: on both previous occasions they have staged the World Cup they have gone on to reach the quarter-finals, and this marks their first turn as hosts since 1986.
Javier Aguirre’s side roll into the opener on an eight-match unbeaten tear, underpinned by a defence that has been breached just twice across the entire run. Stalemates with European heavyweights Belgium and Portugal show a team perfectly at home against the elite, while the rarefied air of Mexico City – and a squad drawn heavily from the home league – should only sharpen their edge.
South Africa, by contrast, arrive short of conviction. Bafana Bafana topped their qualifying section yet won only one of their last five outings – a slender success over Jamaica – and have managed a meagre handful of goals across 2026, much of it against opposition some distance below Mexico’s level. With four of their last six fixtures finishing under 2.5 goals, a low-scoring evening looks firmly on the cards.
Up top, plenty rests on the shoulders of Raul Jiménez. The 35-year-old has rattled in 10 international goals since the turn of 2025, found the net most recently against Serbia, and should relish a kind opener as he sets out on a third World Cup adventure.
