Saturday brings a busy card at Chester where sprint handicaps, middle-distance contests and specialist performers on the Roodee combine to provide punters with plenty of intrigue. Our three experts have each pinpointed a horse they strongly believe will get the job done, and together these form our recommended horse racing accumulator for the afternoon. Between them, they have identified a front-running sprinter perfectly berthed in stall one, a progressive middle-distance colt who has been knocking on the door, and a seasoned course specialist dropped to a tempting weight. All three look primed to strike under conditions that play to their strengths. Below, each expert gives their in-depth reasoning.

Sunday’s Accumulator | |
56/1 - odds when tipped | |
Reasoning This accumulator blends three horses with distinct strengths: Jet Patrol looks primed to rebound from a tactical defeat, Howth continues his winning spree with higher targets in sight, and Tanjen’s rapid progress makes him a standout at Southwell. Together, they provide balance, proven form, and upward momentum for Sunday’s multiple. |
Chester 16:15 – Smart Vision
John Pentin; Sports journalist at BettingTips4You
Rationale:
John Pentin is siding with Smart Vision in the five-furlong sprint at Chester. This four-year-old, trained by Jessica Macey, comes here with confidence high after landing a similar event at Beverley less than a month ago. That win came by a neck, achieved from the front, where he dictated throughout and refused to let challengers past. The 3lb penalty he carries today does not look prohibitive, particularly given he has previously competed effectively from higher marks in the mid-80s.

The draw has been kind, with stall one often golden at this course, especially for pacey types who like to make the running. Oliver Stammers, who takes the ride again, will almost certainly aim to ping the gates and establish control from the outset. Chester’s sharp turns and short straight favour those who can secure a handy position early, and Smart Vision’s natural speed makes him ideally suited to that style. Pentin is convinced that if he grabs the rail and sets a strong tempo, he will be very difficult to reel in, even against some proven handicappers in the field.
Chester 17:20 – Jupiter Ammon
Herrin Kendrick; Sports journalist at BettingTips4You
Rationale:
Herrin Kendrick believes Jupiter Ammon has finally found the right set-up to get his head in front. This three-year-old colt, representing Andrew Balding, has built up a series of solid efforts without quite managing to score. On his most recent appearance at Goodwood, he finished just one and a half lengths off the winner in novice company over a similar trip, staying on strongly in the closing stages. That run followed another near miss in a competitive £40,000 handicap on the Downs where he was only three lengths adrift, despite facing more seasoned rivals.
Now stepping into a Class 4 race at Chester, the opposition looks less demanding and his profile suggests he is ready to convert consistency into victory. Callum Hutchinson retains the ride, and his familiarity with the horse is a plus. Jupiter Ammon’s ability to travel smoothly into his races before keeping on gamely implies this track and distance will suit. With his stamina assured and a touch of class from his pedigree, Kendrick argues that everything is in place for Jupiter Ammon to shed his maiden tag and provide a timely breakthrough for his connections.
Chester 15:40 – Paws For Thought
Gram Dodd; Sports journalist at BettingTips4You
Rationale:
Gram Dodd is firmly in the camp of Paws For Thought, a seasoned course performer who has slipped to a very attractive handicap mark. This seven-year-old gelding, trained by Donald McCain Jnr, is now a stone lower in the weights than at the beginning of the season. That drop has brought him back into focus, particularly as he showed plenty of spark here last week when running prominently before striking for home earlier than ideal. Despite fading late, the effort suggested his turn is close.
Few horses boast the same level of affinity with Chester’s unique layout as Paws For Thought, who consistently runs well around these tight bends. The fact he comes into this contest on a career-low figure only strengthens the case. Apprentice Charlie Maggs, taking 5lb off his back, enhances his chances further by reducing the burden even more. With several rivals either out of form or unproven at the track, Dodd is confident that Paws For Thought’s proven course craft and advantageous mark make him the one to beat. A return to front-rank tactics could see him strike once again where he has often excelled.
