A Mid-Summer Night’s Clash

Key Stats
– Newcastle United have scored in every friendly this summer despite conceding six goals.
– Chelsea, under Pochettino’s management, have found the back of the net nine times in two matches.
– Despite conceding early goals, Newcastle United fought back from 2-0 and 3-1 deficits to secure a draw in their last friendly against Villa.

The Premier League Summer Series is in full swing and it is now time for Newcastle United and Chelsea to take the stage at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Wednesday night. This friendly match holds significant value as both teams are eager to build momentum and try out their new tactics ahead of the upcoming season.

The Magpies Show Their Mettle

Newcastle United, popularly known as the Magpies, have been an enigma during this summer’s friendlies. Having secured Champions League qualification last season thanks to a rock-solid defence, they’ve faced some defensive turmoil this time around. In their previous three matches, they conceded six goals against Gateshead, Rangers, and Aston Villa. Despite these defensive lapses, the Magpies managed two victories and a draw, showcasing their formidable character.

The most recent face-off against Villa was a testament to the team’s resilience. Starting with a two-goal deficit within the opening 11 minutes, they switched gears and managed to secure a 3-3 draw. Despite the initial struggle with an experimental back-three defense, the English side’s fighting spirit was clearly on display. Their ability to turn the tide and secure a draw against potential top-four rivals was impressive.

As they approach the game against Chelsea, Eddie Howe’s team is expected to significantly tighten their defences. However, dealing with Mauricio Pochettino’s new-look Chelsea team might prove to be a daunting task.

Pochettino’s Experimental Blues

On the other hand, Chelsea, under the stewardship of Mauricio Pochettino, is in the midst of significant change. Thirteen players have departed since last season, allowing Pochettino to bring in fresh faces to reshape the squad. Although more signings are on the horizon, the Argentine manager seems satisfied with the team’s performance so far, having scored nine goals in matches against Wrexham and Brighton.

Notably, the Blues displayed a ruthless streak against Brighton, thanks to the heroics of Mykhaylo Mudryk and Nicolas Jackson. Despite Pochettino’s concerns over some of the goals conceded, the team seems to be growing in confidence. The anticipation among the Blues’ supporters is palpable as they look forward to an improved season under the former Tottenham Hotspur manager.

Team Compositions and Formations

Howe is expected to abandon the experimental back three and field a more conventional starting lineup. With regular goalkeeper Martin Dubravka having played the full game against Villa, and Nick Pope recovering from a hand operation, Loris Karius could be assigned the role between the sticks. With recent Leicester City recruit Harvey Barnes likely to start from the bench, the rest of the lineup could reflect their usual Premier League structure.

On the contrary, Chelsea might see some alterations. Players like Malo Gusto and Andrey Santos might be rested, giving Jackson a chance to start over Nkunku. If Reece James isn’t fit enough, Marc Cucurella may play as a right-back. The midfield could see Enzo Fernandez and Cesare Casadei start, with Conor Gallagher likely dropping out after playing the full game against Brighton.

Prediction and Betting Tips

With a close inspection of both teams’ current forms, here are our three predictions:

  1. Market Prediction – Both Teams to Score: Considering Newcastle’s knack for scoring even while conceding and Chelsea’s offensive form, both teams finding the net seems plausible. Moreover, with both sides testing new formations, it is possible that the defences might be vulnerable.
  2. Correct Score Prediction – 2-2 Draw: Given Newcastle’s resilience, they’re expected to put up a tough fight against Chelsea. Additionally, with Chelsea’s knack for conceding goals while maintaining a decent scoring run, a 2-2 draw seems like a fair prediction.
  3. Goalscorer Prediction – Nicolas Jackson: The Chelsea forward has showcased tremendous form recently, making him a good candidate to be among the goalscorers in this match.
