Levante’s Decisive Clash with Alaves: A Make-or-Break for La Liga Return

Key Stats
Levante have kept clean sheets in their last three meetings against Alaves.
Alaves have failed to secure a win in their last five away games.
Levante boasts an impressive record of four wins and two draws in their last six matches.

This Saturday evening, Levante will welcome Alaves to their turf for the second leg of the Segunda Division playoff final, following a goalless draw in their initial faceoff. A clear victor will need to emerge from this tense encounter as both sides vie to regain their position in Spain’s top-tier football division, La Liga, for the 2023-24 season.

Levante: The Persistent Contender

Last season, Levante were demoted from La Liga following their 19th-place finish, but their record indicates a steadfast refusal to remain in the second tier for two consecutive seasons since 2010. The Frogs wrapped up the regular season in the third spot in the league table, just missing the automatic promotion to Las Palmas based on goal difference, both teams being equal on the head-to-head record.

Levante’s Determined March towards Victory

During the playoffs’ semi-finals, Levante faced Albacete and exhibited a dominating performance. They secured a 3-1 victory in the away fixture and maintained their momentum with a 3-0 home win four days later. Even though the first leg against Alaves didn’t favour them in terms of the scoreline, the draw can be viewed as a positive outcome considering the challenging away fixture. Javier Calleja’s squad is now set on making it three home victories in a row in the upcoming second leg.

Alaves: The Seeking Challenger

Alaves, on the other hand, ended the regular season in fourth place in the table, just one point shy of Las Palmas. They too, like Levante, were relegated from La Liga last season, landing in 20th position. Now, they’re striving to make an immediate return to the top tier.

Luis Garcia’s side had a tough semi-final against a competent Eibar. After a 1-1 draw in the first leg away from home, they managed to seal a 2-0 victory in the second leg, moving them into the final. However, Alaves’ current record is slightly worrying, with no victory in their last five away matches and just one win in eight games without their home supporters. They also have a poor recent record against Levante, having won just once in their last seven matches.

Team Line-ups and Key Players

In terms of player availability, Levante will be without Jose Campana and Pablo Martinez due to long-term knee injuries. Yet, with no new injury reports, the same team that took to the field in the first leg is expected to reprise their roles, with Joni Montiel and Jorge de Frutos on the wings. Mohamed Bouldini, the team’s top scorer this season with eight goals, is likely to lead the attack alongside Brugui.

Alaves, however, have a decision to make at centre-forward. After Mamadou Sylla was substituted for Asier Villalibre in the first leg, Villalibre could potentially start in the center. The team’s leading scorer Luis Rioja, with 10 goals this season, will likely feature on the left. No injury concerns were reported for Alaves following the first leg, though Salva Sevilla and Nikola Maras will be out due to leg and knee injuries, respectively.

A Deep Dive into the Stats and Predictions

Going into this encounter, Levante seem to have the upper hand. While Levante’s defence has been sturdy recently, particularly at home, Alaves have attacking players who have shown they can score when needed. Their leading scorer, Luis Rioja, has ten goals this season, and there’s always the possibility of him finding the net in this crucial match.

However, Levante’s resilience, combined with their home advantage, could likely be the deciding factors. They have been consistently strong at home and have kept clean sheets in three of their last meetings with Alaves. This solidity in defence, combined with their potent attacking force, means that they are a good bet to emerge victorious, even if Alaves manage to score. Levante to win and both teams to score looks therefore a decent option, also considering that the visitors will have nothing to lose if they fall behind during the game.

When it comes to the correct score bet, I think a 3-1 for the hosts looks a decent proposition. This prediction is based on Levante’s recent goal-scoring form, particularly in the playoff semi-finals against Albacete. In those games, they showed that they have the capacity to score multiple goals, recording a 3-1 victory away and a 3-0 win at home.

Meanwhile, Alaves have been struggling on the road, without a win in their last five away games. However, they have managed to find the back of the net on a few occasions, which is why we believe they could score a consolation goal.
